SteveE Posted 20 January , 2008 Share Posted 20 January , 2008 Could never find this casualty until I used Geoff's search engine and now I know why, surname is listed as MERRY on CWGC and not MURRAY. Name: MERRY, WILLIAM FREDERICK Initials: W F Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Private Regiment/Service: Royal Fusiliers Unit Text: 9th Bn. Age: 26 Date of Death: 20/11/1917 Service No: 12830 Additional information: Son of Mr. and Mrs. William Frederick Merry, of 31, Derby Rd., Hounslow, Middx. Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 3 and 4. Memorial: CAMBRAI MEMORIAL, LOUVERVAL All the information I have points to his surname as MURRAY, is it possible to confirm one way or the other Terry? I'll add what details I've got in further posts. Regards Steve

Myrtle Posted 20 January , 2008 Share Posted 20 January , 2008 Steve I find this interesting as I know that from experience the CWGC don't take the Index of War Deaths as evidence for a soldier's date of death. This could be an another example of the unreliability of the records. Myrtle

Myrtle I get the feeling you are right, this appears to be the closest William Frederick MERRY/MURRAY birth in the GRO that matches your census return and it's for MERRY....
