ALDAWSON77 Posted 19 January , 2008 Author Share Posted 19 January , 2008 Excellent. Thanks for that. I've discovered that the 14th DLI fought in Battle of Cambrai which started a couple of weeks before Andrew Shannon died.
Derek Robertson Posted 6 February , 2008 Share Posted 6 February , 2008 Both brothers were born in Hawick and both are commemorated on the Hawick Roll of Honour. Danny Shannon was killed at Loos on the first day and has no known grave. Andrew Shannon on the right.
ALDAWSON77 Posted 8 February , 2008 Author Share Posted 8 February , 2008 Derek, Thanks for the photographs. There is more than a passing resemblance between Daniel and my Father In Law. A little query with Andrew though. It was my belief he was with the DLI but what cap badge is that? Isn't it The West Yorks?
Red Rose Posted 11 June , 2014 Share Posted 11 June , 2014 I know this topic has been dormant for a long time but Daniel played rugby for Oldham in the Northern Union. He was one of nine of our players that died in WW1. I have attached a photo of "Danny" playing for Oldham in 1913. Guest Posted 11 November , 2017 Share Posted 11 November , 2017 Hello, I'm arriving 9 years late to this thread I know. My husband is the grandson of Andrew Shannon. Andrew was born 19 August, 1880. He married Isabella 24 April 1906. They had 2 children, Andrew Murray Shannon (21 July 1907) and Agnes McCartney (5 March 1916) (my mother-in-law). He was killed in action during the Battle of Cambrai on 3 December, 1917 whilst with the 14th Durham Light Infantry. His body was never recovered. His memorial tablet is in the Cambrai Memorial Cemetery. He is listed on various honour boards as either Pte or L/C. After the end of the war his son Andrew (known as Murray) sailed to Australia, arriving there 26 December, 1926. His mother and sister arrived in Australia 19 August 1929.
