Pte Robert Barrie, 201817, 1/5th Kings Own Scottish Borderers

Enlisted: in Galashiels as Private 21279, 7th KOSB about August 1915. Served in 7/8th KOSB after the two battalions amalgamated due to losses at Loos in September 1915.

Transferred: 1/5th KOSB in February 1917. He almost certainly arrived in Egypt just in time for preparations for the 2nd Battle of Gaza (poor lad).

Killed in action: 8th November 1917, Wadi Hesi (15 men of the 1/5th KOSB killed or died of wounds)

Do you have his MIC which may give his date of entry to theatre of war?

Cheers,

Stuart

Stuart,

Thanks for the above. I hoped to find out exactly in which action he was killed and your help is very much appreciated.

Unfortunately we don't have the MIC or the medals.

How do I get access to the MIC.

Alan.

How do I get access to the MIC.

Hi Alan,

Here is the link to his MIC

It costs £3.50 to download, but may or may not give any additional information. If he disembarked overseas it should give the date and place of his date of entry to theatre of war. If he went overseas post-1915 then it will be a very basic MIC and won't give any further info to what you have already.

Regarding numbers in the same region: no deaths are recorded in 1915 - the earliest is March 1916. Doesn't mean that he wasn't overseas by end of 1915 though. Two of my great uncles enlisted in the KOSB in June 1915 and were on their way to the 1st Battalion at Gallipoli in September - just about time to get used to the uniform!

All the best,

Stuart

The remains of Private Alexander Barrie, Royal Scots (Pioneers), a young Dalkeithian, who has given his life in his country's service, were interred in the Dalkeith Cemetery on Monday afternoon. He was wounded in France some five or six weeks ago, and was subsequently admitted to Woking Military Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday last. The deceased, who was 20 years of age, was the second son of Mr and Mrs James Barrie, 88 High Street, and the funeral, which was accorded military honours, took place from his parents house.
