ALDAWSON77 Posted 15 January , 2008 Share Posted 15 January , 2008 Can anyone help in finding which battalion and whereabouts my Great Grandfather served. He was awarded BWM and VM both of which are engraved with PTE J. W Dawson 38726 East Yorks. I have already searched the WW1 pensions records available on Ancestry.co.uk with no luck. Al. ALDAWSON77 Posted 15 January , 2008 Author Share Posted 15 January , 2008 Charles, Could you tell me where the 4th Battalion were raised, could it have been Hull? I'm researching family history and trying to find out where he might have come from. Your help is very much appreciated. Al.
joseph Posted 15 January , 2008 Share Posted 15 January , 2008 Al, The 4th Battalion was initially from Hull but by the time John joined the EYR it was go where you are sent, again in that number region the majority are from the North East, Sunderland Wallsend etc. Have you got any photos or family storys that may give more clues. ALDAWSON77 Posted 15 January , 2008 Author Share Posted 15 January , 2008 Charles, The North East would actually tie in as post war he worked on Railways in Teesdale and died near Richmond/Catterick. My father was raised by him during WW2 in Middleton Teesdale but unfortunately he past away a decade ago. I have no idea who my great grandmother was as I don't think they were married. Forgive me if this is starting to sound like an episode of Eastenders. However, I know from his death certificate that my Grandfather another John was born in Bedale September 1917, I understand Bedale was home to many troops during WW1, were East Yorks there 1916/1917? Cheers Al.
joseph Posted 15 January , 2008 Share Posted 15 January , 2008 Al, I am not aware of the EYR being in Bedale but as you say the area was full of soldiers, have you tried finding your Grandfathers Birth certificate it could very well give service details of your G Grandfather. ALDAWSON77 Posted 19 January , 2008 Author Share Posted 19 January , 2008 What information can you get from the mic? Would it give me his battalion? I really need his attestation and pension papers, something that'll show his address and NOK details. I've tried ancestry.com again with no joy does this mean that his papers are lost for good? joseph Posted 19 January , 2008 Share Posted 19 January , 2008 His mic won't give you his Battalion but the mic indicates his medal roll number which should give his Battalion. Regards Charles
ALDAWSON77 Posted 8 February , 2008 Author Share Posted 8 February , 2008 I've obtained the MIC. The Roll Number for "Victory" and "British" medal is 0/1/102 B12 page 1266. Does this help at all anyone?? Alan.

ALDAWSON77 Posted 9 February , 2008 Author Share Posted 9 February , 2008 Charles, Sorry, could you explain to me how to make an appeal on "visit the NA". Alan
joseph Posted 9 February , 2008 Share Posted 9 February , 2008 Alan, I do apologize, the sub forum seems to have disapeared, where you could ask anyone visiting the NA to do a quick look up. You may need to employ a competent researcher to have a look for you. Regards Charles
ALDAWSON77 Posted 24 February , 2015 Author Share Posted 24 February , 2015 7 years on already. I have found out that PTE J.W.H. DAWSON was in the 7th Btn. Do you have any information on their war?
Whalebone Posted 24 February , 2015 Share Posted 24 February , 2015 (edited) Hi, Probably mobilized 5 November 1917 to the 4th Reserve Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment. The 1st/4th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment ceased to exist in May 1918. But it does look like he joined the 4th Reserve Battalion and then went overseas with the 7th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment. I have the war diary.
