Remembered Today:

suicide record

My great uncle was George Henry Garland, (b. Falmouth 1897/6). The family story is that he was taken to hospital in Southampton (Netley???) where, as a consequence of his injuries, he committed suicide. It MAY be that he joined the Somerset Light Infantry as there is someone who meets some of his criteria (including his name on the Thiepval Memorial) but I am unable to find him in their book of remembrance in Wells Cathedral. On the other hand, in a very grainy photo, his cap badge looks more like a Staffordshire regiment (twisted rope with what looks like a gun-carriage underneath).

Any suggestions where I should be looking for more information? Would his hospital suicide take him out of memorial records?

Help!

I'm pretty sure his name wouldn't be on the Thiepval memorial if he died at home.

Try posting the photo and blow up the badge if you can, maybe someone will be able to identify it.

Can you obtain his death certificate, if he died in the UK? This would give you the exact cause of death. And if it was suicide, then there might have been an inquest - which in turn would have no doubt been written up in the local paper.

Also local papers are good places to look for the report of a funeral; from the names of those who sent wreaths you can often work out where a person worked, or their near relatives, godchildren etc.

My great-grandfather committed suicide in a hotel in the Midlands, and reading the local newspaper report of the inquest was like reading a play-script about the whole event as each person gave their evidence of when they had last seen him etc.

[EDIT: Snap! But Tony pressed the button before me - and was a lot more succinct!]

When did he die? If it was after 31.08.21. there would be no CWGC commemoration.

Suicide would not prevent his commemoration if he died before that date as cause of death is immaterial. If he died in the UK, his name would not be on Thiepval Memorial.

The other option is his service record if it still survives. There may have been a Board of Enquiry or the results of the Coroners inquest may have been included in the record. The military often used newspaper reports, which unlike today, were published verbatim.

There will have been an inquest, a death certificate and a report in the local paper.

Tony (or anyone else for that matter)... do you know where inquest records will be held? I am trying to trace details of a suicide from WW1 - have tried the local records office etc to no avail.

Brendon.
