Stebie9173 Posted 12 January , 2008 Share Posted 12 January , 2008 His medal card lists: Medal card of Bailey, Harold Corps Regiment No Rank Northamptonshire Yeomanry 145118 Private Northamptonshire Yeomanry 743 Serjeant Northamptonshire Yeomanry 386323 Warrant Officer Class 2 His first number was 743, a pre-war number of 1913 vintage. This was replaced by 145118 in the T.F. renumbering of 1917. The 386323 number is unfamiliar to me but may be post war. He was Mentioned in Despatches in the London Gazette of 6-1-1919 for service while they were in Italy: The following despatch, has been received by the Secretary of State for War from General F. R., Earl of Cavan, K.P., K.C.B., M.V.O., Commander-in-Chief of the British Force in Italy: General Headquarters, 26th October, 1918. My Lord, I have the honour to submit a list of names of those officers, ladies, non-commissioned officers and men serving, or who have served, under my command during the period February 26th, 1918, to midnight, September 14th, 1918, whose distinguished and gallant services and devotion to duty I consider deserving of special mention. I have the honour to be, My Lord, Your obedient servant, CAVAN, General. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE YEOMANRY (T.F.). George, Lt. J. C. C. Lowther, Maj. (A./Lt.-Col.) Sir C. B., Bart, D.S.O. Stalbridge, Lt. H. G., Lord. Bailey, 145118 Sjt. H., M.M. Pedley, 145182 Sqdn. Q.M.S., L. http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/ViewPDF.a...mp;exact=145118 He was also awarded the Military Medal in the London Gazette of 26-5-1917: 145118 Sjt. H. Bailey, Yeo. http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/ViewPDF.a...ilitary%20Medal Steve.
Stebie9173 Posted 12 January , 2008 Share Posted 12 January , 2008 I think that the 368323 number refers to the conversion of the Northamptonshire Yeomanry into the 7th (Northamptonshire) Armoured Car Company, Tank Corps in 1921, and further conversion to the 25th (Northamptonshire Yeomanry) Armoured Car Company, Tank Corps. If so, that moves Harold Bailey's Army Career into the post 1922 bracket, and thus the MOD will possibly hold his Service Records. As for his Military Medal, I can't say exactly but 14312 Trooper D. H. Simmonds of the Northamptonshire Yeomanry was awarded an M.M. in the same issue of the London Gazette: From the Northampton Independent, 12-5-1917 I would say that Harold Bailey's M.M. was also awarded for gallantry at Monchy - if pressed on the matter! These are the men with Northamptonshire Yeomanry numbers that were awarded M.M.s at the same time: 145118 Sjt. H. Bailey, Yeo. 145222 Sjt. C. Knight, Yeo. 145940 Pte. A. T. Manning, Yeo. 145385 Sjt. A. Pringle, Yeo. 145312 Pte. D. H. Simmonds, Yeo. 6 M.M.s are recorded as awarded at Monchy on 11th April 1917. Presuming that the 5 above were all there, the sixth is probably: 145242 Sjt. J. L. Scambler, Yeo. (Gazette 18-6-1917) (By comparison, the Essex Yeomanry (Number range 80000-85000) leading the charge, were awarded 13 M.M.s in the 26-5-1917 Gazette.) As you may have gathered, the 11th April 1917 was the day of an almost singular event on the Western Front after 1914 - a full blooded cavalry charge - consisting of the Northamptonshire Yeomanry, the Essex Yeomanry and the 10th Hussars. See this topic: Finally, whilst I don't have the Northamptonshire Yeomanry Medal Rolls, he more than likely has a 1914 Star (have you downloaded his MIC?) as the Northamptonshire Yeomanry was one of the Territorial units rushed to France to plug the serious gaps in the B.E.F. left by the early fighting. The Northamptonshire Yeomanry headed to France on 5th November 1914, 24 officers and 459 men strong (+ horses). The horses were somewhat superfluous for a while, as they went straight into trenches in the Neuve Chappelle sector. I strongly suspect that Harold Bailey would have been one of the 459. Steve. Stebie9173 Posted 30 June , 2010 Share Posted 30 June , 2010 Rather a belated reply, but I just discovered this in the Kettering Leader of 4-5-1917 - and the name started to ring bells. I can also confirm that he was one of the original Northamptonshire Yeomanry men who went to France in November 1914. Harold Bailey was also entitled to the Territorial Efficiency Medal. Steve.
