WhiteWolf Posted 12 January , 2008 Share Posted 12 January , 2008 Good afternoon Ladies and Gentleman (and the those who don't fit either if these) A Quick Question Did the Northumberland Fusiliers use a 17/ prefix at any time in their regimental numbering system? The reason for the question is I have found a couple of lads that I at first thought belonged to the 17th West Yorkshire (2nd Leeds Pals) but they also served with the Northumberland Fusiliers and thought those nice people at the N.A. had just got their service numbers mixed up. But then I had a terrible thought - did the Northumberland Fusiliers use the prefix as well Can any one help please. Regards Andy

Tyneside Chinaman Posted 12 January , 2008 Share Posted 12 January , 2008 Hi The NF certainley numbered the 17th men 17/1 - 17/1000+ this was The North East Railway Battalion and the men came from all parts of the North East Railway area the majority I think from Yorkshire Graham will correct me. Thge north East railway magazine lists all men who enlisted and gives their station and employment - it is relevantly simple to cross reference the battalion roll in the book to find you man. I believe Naval and Military have repro'd the book, originals are now extremely scarce I got mine for 17/6 in 1964. However I know when I did my reserach on the Tyneside Irish a lot of Leeds and Bradford pald wound up in the NF - do you have their numbers? most were allotted five figure numbers starting 4-----. If you need a look up let me know - I know Graham is away at the moment. regards John Sheen

WhiteWolf Posted 13 January , 2008 Author Share Posted 13 January , 2008 Thanks everybody So it's confirmed that these "Lads" were 17th Fusiliers and not my "Lads" from the 17th West Yorkshires. But saying that they may have come from or transferred in to the 2nd Leeds Pals as the N.A. does say they served at some point in the West Yorkshire Regiment. Cheers again Andy
