toffo Posted 11 January , 2008 Share Posted 11 January , 2008 pals, I know this may be a dumb question, but on a plaque in my daughters school hall, one of the listed dead is shown as Patterson. John First assistant master. my question is- was this a military rank? or was it his school position? just i've never heard of it before regards toffo
Tom Morgan Posted 11 January , 2008 Share Posted 11 January , 2008 It would be his position on the staff of the school. When I started teaching in 1967, all teachers other than the Head Teacher and Deputy Head Teacher were officially classified as Assistant Teachers. It goes back to the days when the Head Teacher was technically responsible for the education of all the pupils, with the other teachers assisting him. toffo Posted 11 January , 2008 Author Share Posted 11 January , 2008 Thanks for that Tom /delta it confirms I have the right one on the CWGC database, the plaque was salvaged from the boileroom a few years ago and hung in the hall. And seen as i'm researching it for the schools centenary (more volunteered than volunteer!) i better get it right or it'll probably mean a hundred lines once again many thanks toffo
