warbuff1 Posted 11 January , 2008 Share Posted 11 January , 2008 Can anyone help with any info on Gunner 296972 Herbert Sidebotham 124th Siege Battery RGA. I know he is buried in Talana Farm Cemetery and was killed 18th October 1917 but wondered if anyone had any info on his service record as his medal card doesn't hold much information. I know he joined in 1915 and someone said possibly joined 155th East Cheshire Heavy Battery, Can anyone confirm these details? Cheers Wayne
ANDREWPARTINGTON2 Posted 22 January , 2008 Share Posted 22 January , 2008 i know that he joined up at the same time as his older brother thomas who survived i dont have any records or information for thomas. as far as im aware they caught the train down to stockport(edgerley station and prob signed up at the armoury which used to be heavy guns(now a T.A unit)

kevinrowlinson Posted 29 January , 2008 Share Posted 29 January , 2008 I think you will have to get the war diaries; http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalog...;accessmethod=0 http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalog...;accessmethod=0 Kevin
John_Hartley Posted 29 January , 2008 Share Posted 29 January , 2008 Chaps Just to confirm that his service number is definately one of the batch allocated to 155th Battery in the early 1917 re-numbering of Territorials. His medal index card doesnt list an earlier number so it'll be reasonable to assume that he got a pretty swift transfer to 124th Siege. John (PS: and for Gawd's sake don't mention artillery when you come to the Armoury for the WFA meeting - they're very proud of them being 6th Cheshires drill hall - make sure I show you "the tablecloth"!) kevinrowlinson Posted 29 January , 2008 Share Posted 29 January , 2008 John, "Just to confirm that his service number is definately one of the batch allocated to 155th Battery in the early 1917 re-numbering of Territorials. Perhaps you can point me to some gunners records that collaborate your statement. Kevin

warbuff1 Posted 29 January , 2008 Author Share Posted 29 January , 2008 Ok tablecloth it is and will keep stum regarding the artillery Wayne We already know from the Chapel en Le Frith war memorial that he joined up in 1915 as it list in year order all those who served and a cross next to name of those who were killed. Quite unusual i think for a memorial Wayne
ANDREWPARTINGTON2 Posted 29 January , 2008 Share Posted 29 January , 2008 Also that he joined up with his brother thomas did they join the same battery? thomas survived the war and dont know too much about him
John_Hartley Posted 29 January , 2008 Share Posted 29 January , 2008 Perhaps you can point me to some gunners records that collaborate your statement. Kevin If you are saying that, unlike a Territorial infantryman's MIC, a Territorial artilleyman's would not display a pre-1917 number if he had served abroad before 1917 then I accept the expertise of your wider research. However, alphabetically, the first RGA man I come across on my website is Ellis Adshead. This is his MIC - clickety click And I think you probably meant "corroborate". ororkep Posted 29 January , 2008 Share Posted 29 January , 2008 Also that he joined up with his brother thomas did they join the same battery? thomas survived the war and dont know too much about him Could have, as a driver, innitial J Sidebotham though, Back row, third from left in uniform. John_Hartley Posted 29 January , 2008 Share Posted 29 January , 2008 A lucky bunch in the photo, I reckon. Assuming they are all Stockport lads, then I think they all made it through (at least none of their names appear on a civic war memorial in the Borough). John_Hartley Posted 31 January , 2008 Share Posted 31 January , 2008 Wayne No - sorry, mate. All my notes are on the dead uns. Local Heritage Library has a file of "general" articles next to the obituary files. May be something in there. ororkep's cutting is the sort of thing that they have in there.
