Jim

He was Reginald.

I have just read the 1 Wessex Field Co WD (27 Div RE). There is not much in February 1915, and the WD of the Commander RE is missing. The Wessex WD records that on 14/02/1915 Lt Carr was killed at St Eloi. (A C H Carr). 1 Wessex were attached to 80 Infantry Brigade, 27 Div.

The action at St Eloi on the night of 14 to 15/02/1915 is recorded in the WD of 80 IB. 3 Kings Royal Rifles attacked trenches 19, 20, 21 and 22 at St Eloi and there is a separate report of how Captain Wills RE was killed. (R B M Wills). He had arrived with some of his men to repair the parapets of trench 20 and was killed assisting a Private to move a KRR Officer by stretcher. This action is mentioned in the WD of 2 Wessex Field Company. There is no mention in the WD of 80 IB about Lt Carr.

14 to 15/02 seems to be the only action where Reginald would have been wounded.

Brian

EDIT: He is named in the Times OCL 26/03/1915 under Wounded RE (TF).

Bence, 685 Spr R E

Bradfield, 900 Spr A

Foster, 885 Spr C J

Room, 186 Cpl D

Wiseman, 619 Spr C

All have a 1914-15 date of 22/12/1914 which could put them with 27 Div RE but only Arthur Bradfield has papers (Ancestry WO 364 Bra 53020). His papers mention his wound but his AF B 103 starts later in 1915 and does not have any details of his earlier wound.

Jim

He was Rifle Brigade and not KRRC as shown on the list. The July 1915 WD of 7 Rifle Brigade should be in WO 95/1896/1 but it is missing. It is, however, in with the WD of 7 KRRC in WO 95/1896/3. He was wounded on 01/07/1915 and is named in the WD.

The OCLs in the Times 29/07/1915 and 05/08/1915 show wounded of 7 Rifle Brigade but I can not see Rfn Wallis in them. Cpl Wansbrough is in the list 29/07 as are Rfn Izard and Springett, wounded on 02/07. Those gassed on 02/07 are also in the OCL 29/07. Some of those wounded between 05/07 and 08/07 are in the OCL 05/08/1915.

Courtesy TNA WO 95/1896/3 (should be in 1896/1).

Brian.

Brian.

Thank you Brian. I am surprised that more errors did not occur. I should be grateful if you (or dink) could explain how the casualty lists were gathered in the first instance. In the field, casualty clearing station or hospital (or elsewhere). Someone is sat at a typewriter to produce them - where. Finally does the information come from their pay book or somewhere else ?  An incapacitated casualty could not reel off their name and service number.  Just a novice trying to learn.

I wish I could answer. I've been researching these Casualty Lists for years in the hope of finding my RE grandfather on one. The basic form that every Unit had to fill out was a Field Return, which was submitted every Sunday to the Adjutant General at the Base. All sick and wounded, and all other comings and goings, had to be shown. In the case of wounded the AG would prepare the Official Casualty Lists which appeared in the Times.

The soldier's record had to be noted and this would be done by the Records Office for the Regiment, which is why these lists are under individual Record Offices - but the Soldier's AF B 103 or Statement of Services only rarely shows a list number.

I do not know who prepared the lists that are on this thread, but it seems that once the Records Office had been notified there was no need to keep the forms, or perhaps they were kept but released when there was a paper shortage so that the reverse sides could be used for other reasons. The lists on here can only be a small percentage of those that were generated.

I attach a specimen Field Return of 94 Field Company RE (19 Div) for week ending 07/07/1916. Courtesy TNA WO 95/2070. One of the very few to be found in War Diaries.

63522 W G Clements is on this list HA 763, which I originally posted on p 23. He died of wounds on 08/07/1916.

The AF B 103 of 61759 W F Miles and the A F B 103 of 15954 Flynn G do not show any list numbers but do record to which hospitals they were sent.

47009 Mumford J has a hospital admission for 34 CCS on 05/07/1916. GSW L arm. He was evacuated on an Ambulance Train on the same day and discharged under para 392 (wounds) in 1917.
