Lincspoacher

Thanks for this. I have seen a good number of 1915 lists but I am concentrating on 1916 hoping to find my RE grandfather who did not go out to France before 31/12/1915.

65 FC were part of 10 (Irish) Div. The Unit War Diary and the WD of the Commander RE 10 Div can be seen on Ancestry under War Diaries, Gallipoli.

65 FC sailed from Devonport on 07/07/1917 and arrived at Alexandria on 19/07/1915. They landed at Suvla Bay on 07/08/1915. On 16/08/1915 they were ordered to plug a gap in the line on Kirech Tepe ridge which they held until they were relieved by infantry. Their casualties were 2 Officers and 4 o/r killed, 1 Officer and 25 o/r wounded and missing. 65 FC has one of those rare WDs which contain Field Returns and all casualties from this action and others are named. Very good reading.

I have been likewise searching for my great grandfathers MGC service but with out success yet!

Were these 65th FC men thrown in to the front lines as infantry, that would explain the high casualties! I had guessed it could have been an incident at sea like a mine or submarine.

Hope you are successful in your search for your grandfathers war service with the RE .

It seems from the WD that they were the only troops on hand to plug the gap.

I believe RE soldiers were trained to fight as infantry if the need arose in addition to their specialist roles; right from the start of the war Field Companies were in action like this (I'm thinking of Le Cateau, for example). So I suppose employing them to plug a gap would be less risky than it might at first appear.

Cheers, Pat.

Yes Pat, they certainly were. There are lots of examples in Unit WDs.

I have already posted this List H A 3977 on 20/09/2016 under post number 633. Perhaps if you find any RE lists, particularly for 1916, it might be worth checking the H numbers with me please, but thank you for showing interest and thank you for posting List H A 14466. I will index that one.

Out of interest I have almost 4000 names in my RE library based on these casualty lists and the partial lists in RE Sick and Wounded 1916 in U&F. This represents only a fraction of the men who served in the RE but in time I hope to extend it by including names in WDs.

Another list from France not previously posted, H 5897 dated February 1916. 97167 Spr Hale H is named in the Times OCL 22/02/1916 under RE wounded. I have him on another list too faint to post. He was admitted to 10 CCS on 02/02/1916 from 1 Northumberland ? FA. His Unit was given as 7 Co. He also is named on list H 5888 (post 350) as being admitted to the Mil H Dover on 13/02/1916. Unit shown as RE. This list confirms his Unit as 7 FC. He is also mentioned in the 7 FC WD (50 Div) as being wounded on 01/02/1916. The WD names all o/r casualties and reinforcements in early 1916.

Another one for my RE index. List H A 3984 France, November 1916.

1726 Spr C Cane is named in the Times OCL 06/03/1916 (Second List) under RE wounded. At that time the Times identified the Units of TF casualties. It showed him under 1st S Mid FC (TF). This list must be for a later event.

List H A 471 June 1916.

I did a FMP number check on RE 79124 (Spr J Gainford who is named in the Times OCL 06/05/1916 under RE wounded - Shock (Shell) ) and up came this list with 79124 Spr J H Flanaghan. The correct number for J Flanaghan is 79142. His SWB roll says that he was discharged on on 11/10/1915 but this must be a mistake. The service record of 104896 William Carter shows that his second stint in France was from 17/06/1916 to 02/07/1916.
