chris basey Posted 3 January , 2008 Share Posted 3 January , 2008 Have come across a photo album which contain many pictures of people/soldiers who, I'm pretty certain, are at a WW1 War Hospital. There's not a single caption in the whole album so all is totally anonymous. Can anyone recognise the building, please?
Paddy 60th Posted 3 January , 2008 Share Posted 3 January , 2008 Chris It may be Woodcote Park at Epsom, now the RAC Country Club. It was a hospital in WW1 and from about 1916 was used for Canadian casualties my Grandfather being one of them. I'll try and find some period pictures as I live not far away and can check the local museum. Meanwhile it would be interesting to see whether there are any Canadian soldiers in the other pictures you have in the album. The building certainly looks similar to the one that is still standing but I believe that the original was partly destroyed by fire in the 1930's. marina Posted 4 January , 2008 Share Posted 4 January , 2008 The frontage resembles Barshaw House in Paisley, Scotland. It became a military hospital in 1917. I cannot be 100% sure, but it does look very like it. Marina
chris basey Posted 4 January , 2008 Author Share Posted 4 January , 2008 Many thanks for that Marina - as you say it does look very much like it. The only response so far!

Roger Chris Have had a chance to look at some pictures of the current Woodcote Park but it does not look like the same building as in your picture - sorry for the false hope but I see you have had what looks like a more positive lead from Marina. Keep us posted. Best regards, Roger.
marina Posted 4 January , 2008 Share Posted 4 January , 2008 Any other pictures shpwing the vicinity in the background? As I said, I'm not 100% sure of this ID, but Barshaw has some lovely grounds, a walled garen which is quite distinctive, and a big pond. Anything like that in view? chris basey Posted 4 January , 2008 Author Share Posted 4 January , 2008 Marina Several photos suggest park-like grounds. I have attached one of a lake and one which appears to have a walled garden type wall in the background. Thank you for your interest.
