glazzers Posted 30 December , 2007 Share Posted 30 December , 2007 I would be grateful if someone could help me with the following: I am trying to locate the position where my grandmothers brother was killed on 25th march 1917. I know it was in a trench on Mullins Way reference number G.17.b.8.1. ( somewhere near Philosophe) Prior to being killed he was at Tenth Avenue reference G.17.d.8.55. He was a Private in 2nd battalion Notts & Derby regiment. Any info in tracing these two positions would be highly appreciated.
stevem49 Posted 30 December , 2007 Share Posted 30 December , 2007 If it is in the region of Philosophe then i think it is Loos 44a NW3 sheet. Both refs are east of Philosophe and opposite the line at Hulluch. The squares mentioned - b and d though do not have any trenches (31/10/1917) It looks like G17.b.8.1. is on the Hulluch Road and G17.d 8.55 is Bois Carre. The next square east does have 6th and 7th Avenue Trenches though. The 9th SF were there in 1918. I am sure i have seen Tenth Avenue in the notes but not on a map. If you want an image, PM me your address. stevem

glazzers Posted 31 December , 2007 Author Share Posted 31 December , 2007 Brilliant. Thanks guys for all this info. I have been trying to find this info for ages. I only discovered this forum yesterday and within the day I have all this info. The loos map 44a NW3 mentioned. Where can I buy a copy ( 4 May 1917 version ). I am living and working in Belgium and would like to visit the site ( I have already been to the grave). Here is the extract I have from the Battalion War Diary: About 4.30 a.m. the germans made a raid on the left of the battalion front. The battalion is holding a very extended front with a gap of about 150X between its left sentry group and the 9th Norfolk Regt. on the left. The Germans put up a very heavy barrage with Minnenwerfer and Aerial Darts over the whole battalion front and entered the trenches in the gap on the left. They worked up behind our left and rushed an isolated sentry group guarding two Stokes Mortar Guns. They were beaten off leaving 1 Officer, 1 N.C.O. and 1 O.R. dead in our trenches. As I have said I would like to visit the site, I would also like to discover who the other two men were who lost their lives at the same time as my relative on the early morning of 25th March 1917. Thanks again for helping me on my way.

glazzers Posted 14 October , 2013 Author Share Posted 14 October , 2013 I visited the site (Mullins Way Trench) where my relative was tragically killed and whilst I was there I found a plastic eyepiece which seems to have come from a gas mask. My question is does anyone know if gas was ever deployed in this area ??
