FSL R Swallow was killed in an accident on 20 December 1917 when flying Airship SSZ.7 with AMIs Dodd and Hughes, who were injured. The airship landed in fog and collided with SSZ.10; both airships were destroyed by fire.

I hope that this is useful.

Chris,

Just found your posting.

My Grandfather (Victor Dodd) was one of the 3 man crew of the Submarine Scout Airship SSZ.7 flown by Richard Swallow on 20 Dec 1917 when they crashed.

My Grandfather was the Observer/Radio Operator/Gunner and he and the Engineer jumped out and survived when they crashed into SSZ.10 and caught fire. The Pilot (Richard Swallow) stayed with it and died.

There is a good write up on the accident titled "The Polegate Airship Disaster" in the March/April 1989 Wingspan magazine.

Hi,

Sorry to bring this old post back, but I came across it by accident, when trying to find out information on my Great Uncle Richard Swallow, which is why I've joined this group.

Thank you for all the information above. The photo of his headstone was very moving.

I was wondering if there is any more information or a photo available of my Great Uncle.

I also came across this article on the internet tittle 'A Wartime Disaster',which is a report of the tragic events:-

Thanks,

George Swallow
