Lesley,

Losing his arm will likely mean he received a pension, and therefore a chance his records survive. You can search for his records online at Ancestry.com

A quick look shows quite a few Henry Owen records, so it will be a bit hit and miss. But did he serve as Henry Owen or Henry Marke? There is a record for Henry Sidney Edward Marke - maybe him? Henry S E Marke served in the Royal Army Service Corps:

Medal card of Marke, Henry Sidney Edward

Corps Regiment No Rank

Army Service Corps R330166 Private

Have a look at The Long Long Trail linked at the top of the page - it will give you research advice.

Lesley,

Maybe download the two medal cards (you might get both on the same page for just one Pnds3.50 payment if you are lucky).

If one is your man he would likely have a Silver War Badge reference. Having lost an arm he would have been discharged from the army on medical grounds. With the SWB reference you can check the SWB roll for more of his details (or ask a pal to do a SWB lookup for you when tyey next go to Kew).

Does anyone in the family have his medals? His name/rank/regiment and number will be on the rim.

Would this be his birth:

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page

----------------------------------------------------

Births Mar 1897

---------------------------------------------------

Marke Harry Marylebone 1a 523

Hi Ian, yes, thats my harrys birth. my mum last saw her dad in 67, she says he did have a silver medal, but she does not know where it is. mums mum and dad never married, her mum put her in n.c.h for 7 yrs, so she never got to see much of her dad. i will go to kew in the new year, and do a check.nothing would make mum happier than finding out about her dad, and visit his grave to bid a proper goodbye. i really appreciate your help and advice, its very humbling.....thank you....kind regards.....lesley

Lesley,

I was intrigued to see where the name Owen might have come from - mother's maiden name, etc. Anyway, no obvious clues. Here he appears to be in 1901:

Harry Marke, age= 4 born=Ldn St Pancras Middlesex, residence = Tottenham.

I am glad to be of some help - it is an exciting, intriguing, sometimes saddening, and yes, maybe even a humbling experience to track down your own ancestors, so I am happy to help others on that path!

Good luck in your searches and Season's Greetings.
