eyes Posted 16 December , 2007 Share Posted 16 December , 2007 Hello Dave My grandfather was RFA and I must say it does not appear to resemble his. However, the Forum includes many who are experts at just this sort of thing. If anybody can sort out exactly what badge it is, they will be found here. Keep asking. Sorry for the limited help. HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 16 December , 2007 Share Posted 16 December , 2007 It has the appearance of an Artillery Cap Badge{all Branches{except early TF & Volunteers, etc;} wore the same Badge, the badge in the photograph is badly distorted probably by the lighting when taken & transfer to Newsprint,I would suggest that a RA Cap Badge photographed @ an angle to the norm would give similar results

Bruce Graham Posted 17 December , 2007 Share Posted 17 December , 2007 Dear Leadders, the cap -badge certainly looks RA. Quite distinctive scroll along the bottom which holds the RA motto.Qui Facit Gloria Ducunt. However, the photograph clearly seems to indicate that the gun wheel stands proud of the rest of the cap badge. This is a very suggestive piece of evidence. If it could be determined if the wheel revolved, then it would suggest that this was Royal Horse Artillery! The solid one-piece cap badge was standard issue to RFA and would I feel, appear much flatter in the photograph. The badge with the rotating gun wheel was very jealously guarded and entitled to be worn only by Royal Horse Artillery men. As an ex gunner, I was once reprimanded for wearing my fathers RHA cap-badge which had a revolving wheel. Something (which a BSM pointed out in no uncertain terms) I was not entitled to wear. 18 pounder.
jay dubaya Posted 17 December , 2007 Share Posted 17 December , 2007 Interesting point 18 pounder, I was always led to believe that there was no distinction between the fixed and rotating wheels. I have 3 with rotating wheels (lugs) and several fixed wheel (slider). It does make sense that the rotating wheel variety mimics the movement of the RHA, thanks for that, learn something new everyday and the days not wasted, cheers, Jon ps... I can't say what else the badge in the pic would be apart from artillery
daggers Posted 17 December , 2007 Share Posted 17 December , 2007 Small correction to your version of the Gunners' motto, it should be QUO FAS ET GLORIA DUCUNT. I didn't know about the RHA and revolving wheel on the badge either! Daggers
leadders Posted 17 December , 2007 Author Share Posted 17 December , 2007 Thanks Jay, daggers and 18 pounder for the in depth answers i now know that he was Artillery.and shall endeavour to find out what i can about him. Dave
HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 17 December , 2007 Share Posted 17 December , 2007 Link To Previous RA Badge Discussions Moving Wheel Links It is also noted that as well as "Moving" Wheel types there is a "Seperate Wheel" Type {admittedly I have more commonly seen Officers SD Badges thus where the seperate wheel is fitted/fixed above the normal Struck badge ~BUT does not; nor is it intended to; move{see Link Pics, for example}
leadders Posted 17 December , 2007 Author Share Posted 17 December , 2007 Thanks Harry perhaps a bit to in depth for a novice like me but i do appreciate everyones help i can safely say that W.T was in the Artillery but not a specific Regt. HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 18 December , 2007 Share Posted 18 December , 2007 His Medal Index Card will probably confirm service in the RFA,providing he earned a "Star" The below MiC appears to be the only William T Stevenson RFA there arent any Walter T's,so unless he has an obscure Christian Name it couldbe him?? MiC William T.Stevenson RFA
