sotonmate Posted 15 December , 2007 Share Posted 15 December , 2007 Colin You could get the story from the War Diary at Kew. 6 Lincolns is in WO95/1817 and covers the period from Jul 1916 to May 1919. There may be someone here who has it and can quote it for you. If not, a download from Digital Express, for a fee,or a visit to see for yourself. Woodsc Posted 18 December , 2007 Author Share Posted 18 December , 2007 Hi Everyone HELP !!! Has anyone out there got a copy of the war diary for the Lincolnshire Regiment 6Bn for period around 31st May 1917 (WO95/1817) before I request a copy from the NA Hope someone can help Regards...Colin
sotonmate Posted 18 December , 2007 Share Posted 18 December , 2007 Colin Hope you get some response for this. If you don't I would recommend that when you ask NA for a copy get one from early June 1917 (say 3rd) back to as far into May as the minimum page order of 10 takes you for the 8.50 basic fee. This just to be sure that the incident is covered. It just might not have been completely known about for reporting purposes on the last day of May. jim_davies Posted 19 December , 2007 Share Posted 19 December , 2007 Colin, Don't have the war diary, but do have Simpson: "The 6th Lincs entrained at Albert on 17 May and after a quick train journey detrained at Caestre and marched to Thieuschouk, where they billeted. On the 22nd the Division was informed that it was to take part in the coming operations, and two days later the battalion marched to a training area, about six miles in rear of the Wytschaete sector*, where several days were spent in practising the attack" Simpson then skips to 6 Jun 1917. The footnote* states-"The Battalion Diary of the 6th Lincolnshire is written in pencil and in the course of time has become prartcially illegible. This account is, therefore taken from capt RH Calys' Narrative. (Simpson was first publish in 1931) Perhaps death during training. What is your interest in Brown, I think I have something on him, will try to dig it out. Jim Simpson

I have a 1914-15 Star and BWM with his MIC in my collection, plus the 1901 Census return for him. bingo794
