Neale joined the Buffs in October 1907. He went overseas with the 1st Battalion on 7/9/1914 and served later with the 8th and 6th Battalions. I think he continued to serve after the war.

Lowe, the only info I have is that Lowe served in the 7th Battalion. His number was allocated in the first quarter of 1918

Mick

Many thanks, Mick. It's appreciated.

I'd be interested in any information you might have on Henry John Barrell, my grandmother's cousin.

His Medal Card has him as being in both the Buffs & the Royal West Kents, but doesn't give battalions & has two numbers for him, TF 2362 & 200588.

The Theatre of War first served in is given as "The Balkans" with the date entered as "18-07-15"

There is a postcard from him where he is in "A Block, 2 Ward, Tigne Hospital, Malta"

The postmark is half off the edge of the card, so only "Oct 22" is visible not the year. He says he'd been there for 5 weeks.

An entry in an autograph book, belonging to my grandmother's sister, is signed;

"Love from Pte Jack Barrell, Regt No 2362 2/4 Buffs" & dated 20/05/16

There is another postcard from him in 1918, where he seems to be in India.

If you can add anything to this, I'd be really grateful.

Barrell was with the 2/4 Battalion and they were a home service Territorial Battalion. However, one Company of the 2/4 Battalion together with a Company from each of the 2/5 Battalion and 2/4 and 2/5 Battalions of the Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment formed the Kent Composite Battalion (although generally known as the 2/4 Battalion Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment). The following is from the Regimental History

At first it was suggested that a new badge should be found or invented for this composite battalion, but this was vetoed, as Kent is not a sufficiently populous county to maintain a new infantry regiment. The War Office therefore gave authority for the wearing of the Buffs' badge by A and B Companies, and the West Kent badge by the others. The two halves of the battalion had also different record offices at Hounslow, different regimental numbers and so on. It was trained with the rest of the division at Cambridge and afterwards at Bedford under the command of Colonel Simpson. The officers of A Company were Captains Jude and Taunton, Lieuts. Dixon and Filmer, and 2nd Lieuts. Morgan and Larkin. B Company was commanded by Captain Greatorex, with Captain Lamarque and Lieuts. Keble, Wood, Willows and Griffin, all of whom belonged to the 4th or 5th Battalion of the Buffs.

The division was ordered to the East instead of to France, so the Kentish men and men of Kent entrained together on the 17th July at Devonport and next day embarked on the s.s. Northland. They landed at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli Peninsula, on the 9th August, three days after the great surprise landing there and the attack on Achi Baba. During their stay in this theatre of war the men were mostly employed in making trenches and on fatigue work, and the movements from one part to another were unimportant. First they were at " C " Beach, where the commanding officer got wounded, then at West Beach and later on at Lala Baba, but fatigue work was still the occupation of the unit. December, 1915, brought the skilful and successful evacuation of Gallipoli and Suvla. Our battalion withdrew to Mudros, on the island of Lemnos, where it embarked for Egypt on board the Haverford and landed at Alexandria on the 19th December.

The Egyptian history of the Kent Composite Battalion is not of very great interest, although, after changing its name and organization, it took its full share in the Palestine campaign which came later on. Under its old constitution it proceeded to Wardan and afterwards to Fayoum in Central Egypt, but, towards the middle of 1916, Colonel Money, who was then in command, represented the great inconvenience of having his men administered by two record offices and a double lot of paymasters, with the result that an order came transferring all N.C.O.'s and men of the Buffs compulsorily to the 2/4th Royal West Kent Regiment, under which honourable title the men saw much service on their new front, but as they were no longer Buffs their doings must remain unchronicled in this regimental history.

Many thanks for that Mike,

As a Kentish Maid, it's fascinating to see that collaboration between the two regiments.

I'll have to get started researching Gallipoli, as all my other relatives have been on the Western Front. This opens up a whole new area for me.

Thanks again

You have a choice between Private George Harman G13047 of the 7th Buffs and Sergeant (later WO2) George W Harman G7855 of the 1st Buffs. They both were awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field during WW1 but I don't know what either of them did to earn it.

Mick,

As you can tell by my number of posts, I'm new to this forum. I'm a long-time collector of British and American military firearms, 1870-1970.

First of all, my applause for putting together your data base. Truly an effort of great devotion.

Second, a request (of course):

I have had for some years a Webley Mark VI dated 1916.

It is professionally engraved (quite common in those days when officers bought their own pistols): R.C. LANCASTER.

I was told by the previous owner that he had discovered that Lancaster was a lieutenant in The Buffs.

I've not been able to verify that and, if it's true, where he served as the regiment had battalions scattered over two theaters.

Any information available in your data base would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Tony

This might seem a bit strange but ...

When you built the database did you record the soldiers heights ?

The wife and i were discussing whether the average height of men had changed much through the last century.

Not quite sure why we were but that's what we do in the evenings , have mad odd and weird conversations.

Just wondered if you had if you could see what the avereage was ?

Cheers

Simon

Roy Cavander Lancaster received a Special Reserve commission on 25/3/1915 and went overseas on 27/9/1915, joining the 2nd Buffs on 2/10/1915 at Beuvry. The Battalion left the Western Front for Salonica on 25/10/1915. He was promoted to Lieutenant on 1/7/1917. He had been made a temporary Captain on 7/9/1916.

The Regimental History mentions him as a Captain leading an attack on Little Ferdy Trench (Balkans) in December 1916.

He lived in Park Rd, Clarence Gate, London - near Marylebone Station.

The extra info on Lott I have is as following;

Enlisted in the Household Cavalry on 13/6/1915. He was a 21 year old Bank Clerk living at The Yews, Harbledown. No overseas service with the cavalry.

Applied for a commission in The Buffs 24/10/1915.

Discharged from B Squadron for a temporary commission in The Buffs 26/1/1916. Transferred to 14th Royal Sussex Regt 1/7/1916

Simon

I have never collected that type of data but it would be a useful exercise. It would be impossible in my case because the database is built from medal rolls which contain no personal information

Dear Mick,

I'm currently researching details of my Grandfather and Uncle, Robert and James Hubberstey, who served in 7th Buffs from enlistment in 1914.

Stebie9173 has given me some excellent material already on the main thread, but I wondered if your specialised database on the Buffs can shed any additional light.

Regards,

Nick

Mick,

Hope you don't mind if I tug on your sleeve once again.

Do you have any biographical info on Capt. Lancaster (birth date, birth place, parents? Is the London address the one he used before or after the war?)

Would be interesting to track his family if possible and offer them the gun without charge (although I have no idea how I would get them the Webley, considering your gun laws).

Thanks in advance.

Tony

Mate,

I am unsure if I asked this question before but I was after any details or photos on RWK men that served in the Camel Corps.

I show these men may have served in the ICC when the 53rd Div was asked to provide men for the 5th Camel company in July 1916 in Egpyt.

The RWK men from the 2/4th Bn RWK (160 Bde 53 Div) went to form the 5th Company and these are the names I have;

Coleman Fred G. 51020 Pte ICC? 5Co? Ex Royal West Kent Regt (3024) and Hussars

Many of the men from the 5th Company were wiped out during Newcombes raid behind the Turkish lines in Nov 1917. Any details on these men would be a help particularly on any PoW's of this Regt in the hands of the Turks from Palestine.

I know that s a lot but any details or confirmation of the names I have would help here.

Cheers

Hi Mick,

I was wondering if you had any details on G/25307 Pte. Cecil Burrows of the 1st Battalion? I managed to find his MIC and a partial service record, and was wondering if you might have any additional info on him.

Thanks in advance!

I can't add anything to the reply on the other thread

Tom

I have no further info on Lancaster. The address is one that he held in 1921. I don't know what the gun laws are, particularly if it is not deactivated, but it would look nice on my mantlepiece!

Steve

My database is only East Kent men hence the only chap I have is Frank Easton. However, there is no detail to add I'm afraid.

Jeff

No info on Burrows other than the sale of his Victory Medal on ebay in September 08
