Guest danm_b2 Posted 24 January , 2004 Posted 24 January , 2004 I was thinking where can I find information on soldiers that didn't die in WW1, because my great great grandad didn't die, and i would like to know more about him.
Annette Burgoyne Posted 24 January , 2004 Posted 24 January , 2004 danm_b2 If you know where he lived at the time there is the Absent Voters List 1818 (if at area still as them). If you know he was wounded etc. then local and national newspapers have lists of such. Medal index Cards at PRO, list all men who served overseas (knowing full name helps pin-point your man). Also at PRO are the mens service records (but about 3/4 of these were distoryed in the 2nd War. Regards Annette
Guest Ian Bowbrick Posted 24 January , 2004 Posted 24 January , 2004 If you know where he lived at the time there is the Absent Voters List 1818 You mean 1918 of course Annette Some areas also have them for 1919, which I have found useful for soldiers who changed unit since the 1918 list was compiled. Ian
Terry Denham Posted 24 January , 2004 Posted 24 January , 2004 Check 'Grandads's War' on the mother site. Click on 'The Long, Long Trail' at top left of this page.
Annette Burgoyne Posted 24 January , 2004 Posted 24 January , 2004 Absent Voters List 1818 Woops, only a hundred years out . Thanks Ian for pointing that one out, must have had my mind on the family history (trying to do Family Tree Website). Annette
Guest danm_b2 Posted 24 January , 2004 Posted 24 January , 2004 In response to Annettes reply I do know the full name of soldier, Albert Wharton and I do have a picture.
robwilliams Posted 24 January , 2004 Posted 24 January , 2004 There are also the medal rolls at Kew, which will hopefully give a battalion. Rob
Martyn Gibson Posted 26 January , 2004 Posted 26 January , 2004 danm_b2 Try posting your picture on this site it may yield some information on his regiment. You can sometimes tell a lot from a photograph. Welcome to the site Martyn
Guest danm_b2 Posted 30 January , 2004 Posted 30 January , 2004 I have added the photo of my great great grandad Albert Wharton (who looks like me).
