Remembered Today:

Buried in two places?

Twiglet

Recommended Posts

According to 'Find a Grave' - my great uncle is buried in two places. Adinkerke Military Cemetary, and Aldershot Military Cemetary.

I thought he had a grave at Adinkerke - all we have is a grave/memorial reference of B33. Would anyone know if that is a panel, or a grave?

I doubt that the family would have enough money to ship his body back to the UK, so if anyone has any ideas as to what's going on, I'd be grateful!

A confused Twiglet.

Adinkerke does not have any panels. He is on the CWGC list as being buried at Adinkerke.

Presume we are talking of - Tallowin W E, 20382 RGA 20/8/1917.

SDGW has - Tallowin William Edward, born Bow Middx, enlisted - Dover, Abode Hackney Wick Middx, 20382, Bombardier, died of wounds, France and Flanders, 30/8/1917 - Military Medal.

I suggest that 'find my grave' is wrong.

Even if they did have pots of money I don't think they would have been allowed to as the repatriation of bodies was not allowed later in the war - it had ceased to be an option very early during the conflict... I think

Certainly appears to be an error on FAG. Maybe worth contacting them so they can put it right

Glyn - I contacted FAG over something else without success, so I may just leave it. If I can find his grave next year, and pay my respects, that'll be enough for me.

Thanks for all your help.

Twiglet,

Sorry I don't have a photo of the cemetery taken closer to W. Tallowin's headstone.

You'll have to do with this.

See the white arrow (= B 33).

Gosh, many thanks Aurel. Very kind of you to work that out for me.

Looks like it's right on a road, I expected it to be in the middle of nowhere.

Here's hoping I get there next year.

Do I need to have my eyes checked, or are the headstones in the center of the photo of a different shape?

And if so, why?

Twiglet,

Well, I think it used to be in the middle of nowhere, but there are a couple of I think rather recent roads (or enlarged) nearby. The one you see in the background, and not far from it (but not visible on the photo) the motorway A18 - E40 (Oostende - Veurne - Dunkirk.

I took the photo on 28 April this year, and if I remember correctly, the cemetery was not really easy to find. (I'm from the Ypres area, but it was the very first time that I went there.) On my Michelin map the cemetery is marked just south of the motorway (intersection), but it turned out that it was just north ! So, beware ...

I'll post a second picture taken from that road, but unfortunately the headstone is hidden by part of that tree.

Cemetery seen from the road.

The headstone is where I marked a small white cross.

However, not visible due to the leaves of that tree.

Roel

Roel,

They are Czech graves.

And as you see : there is also a plot of German graves.

More than 100 German and Czech.

And many of WW2.

Does the fact that Twiglet's great-uncle is buried at Adinkerke necessarily exclude the possibility that he might indeed also be mentioned, by way of commemoration, on a headstone in Aldershot Military Cemetery?

If you do go, it is easy to find. Off the motorway coming from France, towards Adinkerke village - roundabout - turn left - large Choc and Booze shop for the British - turn left in small road just passed it and it is a few hundred yards on left. My website www.ypressalient.co.uk has some photos - index - cwgc - Adinkereke.

If you cannot get there, contact me and I will take a photo at Easter. We holiday near there most years.

Thanks all and Steve M, thank you for the kind offer. We're hoping to go around April/May. I need to get on the case and start planning our trip!
