gnr.ktrha Posted 8 December , 2007 Share Posted 8 December , 2007 Hello, My great uncle served with this unit in Salonica. Does anyone have any details regarding the unit? What type of gun were issued with? Which brigade and division were they in and any known actions? Many thanks, Stewart
Ron Clifton Posted 9 December , 2007 Share Posted 9 December , 2007 Hello Stewart 196 Heavy Battery RGA was not a divisional unit, although of course it might have supported particular divisions in action. It was part of 82 Heavy Artillery Group (later 82 Brigade RGA) which, like all heavy artillery, was held as GHQ Troops and allocated to corps or divisions as required. It was equipped with four 60-pounder guns. Its War Diary is in file WO95/4798 in the National Archives at Kew. You may be able to order a copy online through their website.
