I am trying to identify my Great Uncles Regiment from a slightly blurred photo I have. He has a common name so finding his regiment would narrow down the search a lot. Many thanks

Hi Mike,

ok here we go, could be Dorsets or Essex, but I'm sure more eyes will pay a visit...it narrows the MICs down a bit anyway,

cheers, Jon

My choices with so little to identify are;-

2nd Dragoon Guards(Queens Bays).

Army Veterinary Corps.

With;-

R.A.F.

Hampshire Regt.

as close outsiders.

The photo was taken c.1918 as you can just make out his overseas chevrons.

Graham.

Can't see the chevrons Graham, I've just blown the pic up and they look more like folds in the material to me...

Didn't think of RAF...good call, wouldn't say Hants though,

cheers, Jon

Many thanks for all the help, thanks Jon for putting the picture on the forum!! My great Uncle is from Salford Manchester . His brother was killed in Belgium in 1917 we have got a lot of information about him.

The R.A.F idea is interesting my Dad seemed to think this but does not Know where he heard it.

Many thanks again

Mike

The RFC was an army unit, so their men could be pictured in General Service Dress. They did not all wear maternity jackets and they did not all wear wings. The cap badge is too blurred, it could be RFC, RAF or several others.

Confident that it is NOT Dorsets as suggested.

In tune with others, I think this is a RFC badge, as it seems to have the typical long F in the centre of a cipher, which would rule out the RAF and the other badges. It is a bit unusual to have an individual in standard service dress, but no reason to doubt that this could happen, for any number of reasons. Looks like he's wearing a fairly new 1917 pattern cap to me...

I can't comment on the RFC badge, but I don't think it is Essex or Dorset - though I can see why one might think that. While the centre could be the castle common to both, I don't see the sphinx or the scroll.

Hope that helps,

Adrian

Many Thanks to all the people who have helped. I have zoomed in on the original photo and I am now fairly sure it is R.F.C also, So down to more research !!.

Thanks again,

Mike Berry.
