181st Brigade, Ashton under Lyne

Hello,

I'm looking for any information with regard to the 181st Brigade (40th Division I think).

The soldier I'm researching enlisted at Ashton under Lyne Town Hall in July 1915.

Any ideas as to what training etc he might have been involved in before being leaving Southampton for Le Havre in June 1916?

And any ideas as to what battles were the 40th Division involved in from early June 1916?

Any assistance will be welcomed.

Paul

Paul,

12th Yorkshires were part of 40th Division and were based in the Maroc sector close to Loos from June to Nov 1916 when they moved down to the Somme.

Thanks Bob. Sorry to be so ignorant about this, but I take it from this that the 40th Division would have been made up of many regiments from different parts of the country? Do you know of a reliable history of the 40th Division?

Paul,

There is a 40th div history which I believe has been reprinted by Naval & Military Press if you check out their website you should find it.

Yes the division was made up of various regiments, go to the mother site, Long Long Trail where the make up of all divisions is explained.

Bob.
