I have a soldier who was KIA on the 20/11/17 and who served with the 16th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regt.), as far as i am aware the following information is correct,

Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regt.)

16th (Service) Bn (Chatsworth Rifles)

117th Brigade

39th Division.

Can anyone tell me where they where on this date (somewhere in Flanders?), and does anyone have the war diary for this period, please?

Any help or information would be gratefully appreciated,

regards,

Pete.

According to the War Diary, the Battalion was Holding trenches in Poloerhoek Section, near the Menin Road.

On the day in question, a shell entered a D Company Dugout, Killing 1 man and wounding 2 others. Two other men appear to have been killed during the day as the totals for the day were 3 KIA and 4 Wounded. The others may have been victims of snipers as the diary mentions they were active over the previous days as well.

I have a photo of the diary page but it is too large to attach to the forum. Pm me an email address and I can send it on that way, if you need.

Hi Pete, here is a nice photo of a 16th Battn soldier showing his battle patch. Johnpost-20062-1196704057.jpg

Truscott also mentions a liberal sprinkling of machine guns traversing parapets and all night approaches to the trenches, which he describes as disintegrated ditches
