Remembered Today:

Identifying marks on a shell case

Dear All

I know this is a WW1 site, but there are so many experts who contribute to this forum, that I am sure that someone will be able to answer this.

A Dutch friend of mine e mailed me this afternoon. He has found a brass shell case in his area of Holland. He wanted to identify what type it was.

If you imagine the base of the shell as a clock face the marks are as follows:

At 12 o' clock there is 17PR

II

At 3 o' clock there is ECC

At 9 o' clock there is LcOT

627

At 6 ' o clock there is 1943

to the left and slightly below 1943 there is & L with the military crows foot underneath. To the right and slightly below the 1943 are the letters CF

I am sorry this is not WW1 related but I am intrigued by this shell case and you are the most contactable experts I have access to. Many thanks

Best wishes

Nick Saunders

I'm not an expert by any means but it appears to be the casing from a 17 pounder mark II (Sherman Firefly perhaps?) manufactured in 1943. Perhaps LcOT relates to a batch number. The crows foot is a war office mark.

Hope this little it helps,

Regards,

Alex.
