NORFOLK YEOMANRY/12TH NORFOLKS

Pals

I'm trying to get a better idea of the above unit's involvement in the war but can only find sketchy references to their movements between divisions and the transition from yeomanry to infantry. Can anybody point me to any sources that include their involvement, at any level, in any of their campaigns, with particular interest in Gallipoli and the Western Frontier Force.

I would be keen to know what engagements they were in and how many casualties they suffered as a result, and any unit history that might be about.

Many thanks

Looks like there might be two sources for you to pursue. "The History of the Norfolk Regiment" By F. Loraine Petre. Vol 2, pp. 301-332 [The 12th (Yeomanry) Battalion in Gallipoli, Egypt, Palestine and France). Norwich Jarrold, 1924. Naval & Military did a 2003 repint, currently on offer for £22 softback (I've no connection with them!!).

And "The Norfolk Yeomanry in Peace and War" by J. Bastin. Norfolk: Iceni Press, 1986 309pp.

Thats fantastic. I'm popping into town tomorrow to help her finish off the Christmas shopping. Looks like yet another trip to Waterstones' book ordering dept.

Many thanks

Greg,

I've just bought this book from the Regimental Museum in Norwich as i'm also interested in the 12th Norfolks (my great-uncle served and died with this battalion). I hoping to arrange another visit to the museum next year to look at the war diaries for the day he died.

If you would like any advance info before getting your copy let me know.

I'm just back from Waterstones and they can order me the book for 48 pounds. How much was the museum charging?

Greg,

I paid £35 but Naval & Military Press have got it for £22 until 21st December!

I mentioned Naval and Military to Waterstones but their computer said "No".

Looks like I'll be logging on to their web site then. Many thanks Tim

Many of Naval & Military Press reprints do not have ISBN numbers which may be why Waterstones does not find them. There's a search facility on their web site and huge selection of books.

Hi pals

Just resurrected this post in case any of you managed to get the Diary or History of 12/Norfolks (too expensive for my one-off look-up!).

If so can you help with the period around 8 December 1917 (Capture of Jerusalem) - one of my Buxton lads (L/Cpl. William LUFF :poppy: ) was k.i.a. that day and is buried in Jerusalem War Cemetery.

Thanks for looking

Hi Martin

Just got back a weekend away and have received your scan with many thanks. I must public thank you for all the scans you have provided me with for the many and various Foresters' men on the Buxton Memorial.

A huge task and just proves again - if any further proof was needed- what a great Forum this is and how generous are the members.
