PLEASE help.

A man landed at Mudros on 28 September 1915.

He was mustered on strength, 1/1st Highland Mounted Brigade F.A.W. Unit.

What is an F.A.W. Unit ... also written as F.A. & W. U. ?

Once back in Egypt he was mustered on strength, 1/1 E.L. F.A.

I assume F.A. stands for Field Ambulance ... but what was 1/1 E.L. ?

All help very gratefully received.

William

Thanks, Mark - I'd never heard of one of those before!

Much appreciated.

I found it mentioned here

http://www.postalcensorship.com/fphs/meetings/05oct15.html

"Information about further covers on display: some units also made up their own censor stamps, in the main they were medical units such as the Friends Ambulance Units, 1st Anglo-Belgian Ambulance Unit and 5th Reserve FAWU (Field Ambulance and Workshop Unit). "

William,

Per Col Michael Young's history of the 'ASC 1902-1918'

F.A.W. Unit = Field Ambulance Workshop Unit

One such unit is listed under 'Lines of Communication - Egypt'

[ASC Co. 772 - NA file ref WO95/4720]

see Young's Annex R - page 353

As for 1/1 E.L. F.A

A shot in the dark, but could E.L. be 'East Lancashire'?

the 42nd (East Lancs) Div were at Gallipoli/Mudros/Egypt

see the LLT here http://www.1914-1918.net/42div.htm

Michael

Thanks Michael.

It fits - especially when I tell you that he was posted on strength, 1/1 EL Field Ambulance, Suez [NB!!] on 26 April 1916.

He was struck off strength, 1/1 EL Field Ambulance, Suez, and posted to Base Mechanical Transport Depot, Alexandria on 26 July 1916.

But the 1/1 is a bit of a 'contaminator'.

Still - he seems to have been a Field Ambulance specialist, and in Salonica he served with the 17th Motor Ambulance Convoy.

quote from the LLT

Field Ambulances, RAMC

1st (East Lancs) Field Ambulance (joined August 1914)

2nd (East Lancs) Field Ambulance (joined August 1914)

3rd (East Lancs) Field Ambulance (joined August 1914)

I imagine 1/1 was a slip of the pen for '1st'

regards

Michael
