The Fighting Padre is a collection of letters from Pat Leonard between 1915 and 1918. From what I hear, he's quite a character so it should be a gripping read. The bad news? Is this perhaps a re-issue or other print of H C Day An Army Chaplain's War Memories from your list, do we know? There is also an H C Day author of Macedonian memories, a Chaplain with the Salonika Army. Possibly all the same person making a second living at writing? Totoro Man Posted 28 June , 2010 Share Posted 28 June , 2010 Schweizer, Richard The Cross and the Trenches ISBN-10: 0313318387 a solidly researched book that delves into the British and American chaplains. it's still out there, but a bit spendy. it investigates how chaplains were perceived by their comrades, attendence, policy on how chaplains should interact with the troops. it provides a very nice cultural overview of what chaplains did. unremarkably some of the most popular chaplains were the ones who lived with them men. (the official policy was that they were to stay far from the front. some fellows regarded this is foolish and counter-productive. and unsurprisingly these men got much higher levels of attendence and earned the respect of the fighting men.) my only disappointment with it is that it doesn't explore the French and the German chaplains. This can still be obtained and is a very religiously thematic biography but does include extracts from letters written home from the Front by Fr Doyle. However, if you want to read all of Fr Doyle's letters written by him to his father during his time on the Western Front I would suggest perhaps looking at the reviews on Amazon of my book "Worshipper and Worshipped," which is largely a chronological account of his life. Willie Doyle wrote 63 letters, 89,000 words (I know because I transcribed them all) to his father between joining 49th Infantry Brigade in November 1915 until two days before his death in the front lines (now with 48th Infantry Brigade.) His last letter is dated 14th August 1917 and he was killed on the "next" big push forming Battle of Third Ypres on 16th August 1917. His letters were a mixture of informative narrative and big chunks of humour interspersed with expressions of his faith. I have set his letters within the context of the battalion war diaries, other pertinent memoirs and historical studies. Fr Doyle was a front line priest at Loos, the Somme battles of Guillemont and Ginchy, Battle of Messines and Battle of Langemarck. It is a big book, but Fr Willie Doyle was an epic personality living in epic times. seaforths Posted 17 July , 2014 Share Posted 17 July , 2014 I recently read and enjoyed the Rev. BG O'Rorke's book 'In the Hands of the Enemy'. It isn't a very long book but very informative especially for anyone researching the battle of Le Cateau. He mentions lots of names. He was only in captivity a short time from August 1914 and in May 1915 his exchange was negotiated. Sadly, he died in 1918 aged 43. Edit: typo. (A publication in the Australian Army History Unit publications series.) A couple of chapters devoted to WW1, a couple to pre-WW1, one between the wards, Two on WW2, and four for the post-WW2 period.
