the gunners dream Posted 24 November , 2007 Share Posted 24 November , 2007 Hi there, Here's one for you. I was shown an address book from WWI. One of the listings was as follows: Private 43657 A M Howlett D Coy L M A A C Hotel Metropole Folkestone Any ideas on this unit? Steve
Ron Clifton Posted 24 November , 2007 Share Posted 24 November , 2007 Steve Is the inscription in cursive handwriting? The most likely is QMAAC, Queen Mary's Army Auxiliary Corps, the forerunners of the WRAC. Ron
mhifle Posted 24 November , 2007 Share Posted 24 November , 2007 Just a guess but could it be some sort an Anti Aircraft Company. Regards Mark
pbrydon Posted 24 November , 2007 Share Posted 24 November , 2007 I agree with Mark, I am sure there were some anti aircraft units on the south coast during part of WW1, I have a reference somewhere which I am sure I will find in due course. pbrydon Posted 25 November , 2007 Share Posted 25 November , 2007 I now understand that Anti Aircraft Corps were part of the RNVR until 1916 when they became part of the RNAS.It seems unlikley therefore that a private would have bneen a member of one of these corps but I may be wrong. Ron Clifton Posted 25 November , 2007 Share Posted 25 November , 2007 Hello Mark/PB I think Anti-Aircraft is a red herring. The Army part of the home-defence AA force was manned by numbered companies of the RGA and RE, and as we already know that this man was in "D Coy" the C after AA cannot stand for company, and there was no "AA Corps". In France and other theatres, the AA units were numbered sections, usually grouped in Batteries designated by a single letter, but still RGA. the gunners dream Posted 25 November , 2007 Author Share Posted 25 November , 2007 Hi Ron, You might have something there regarding the QMAAC because, as far as I can see, this person has no MIC. Steve
Tom Morgan Posted 25 November , 2007 Share Posted 25 November , 2007 The headquarters of the QMAAC was the Hotel Metropole Hostel, Folkestone. Tom
