DavoT Posted 25 November , 2007 Author Share Posted 25 November , 2007 Stephen, many thanks for your welcome and reply. This fills in some more gaps. SGT Davis was formerly in the Royal Engineers and obviously transferred or volunteered for this newer facet of warfare. As an Aussie myself I can appreciate the tasks of the tank crews in these actions. Cheers, David
wullmackie Posted 25 November , 2007 Share Posted 25 November , 2007 David SDGW show him as 306173 Sergt James William Davis. Formerly 508038 Royal Engineers KIA 29-09-18 Wull
DavoT Posted 25 November , 2007 Author Share Posted 25 November , 2007 Hello Wull, many thanks for your reply. Yes I've noticed this too but CWGC states W.J. and his medals are also impressed W.J. (Davis). Given the enormity of 14-18, errors can and must be expected from time to time. On another note, I have some medals to an Australian Gallipoli casualty and death was recorded on his headstone etc as 1918 but his service records and AWM133 show him as DOW 1915. I bought this to CWGC/OAWG attention some years back and they said when headstone was due for refurbishment they would rectify this anomaly. delta Posted 25 November , 2007 Share Posted 25 November , 2007 David - based on his Tankee number, he must have transferred quite late (mid 1918 at a quess) Do you a special link to William Davis?
DavoT Posted 25 November , 2007 Author Share Posted 25 November , 2007 Hi Stephen, no special link except I have his medals and I like to find as much as I can about the man behind the medals. My little way of preserving their sacrifice etc whether a casualty or not. They all did their bit and we cannot change what happened back then. I dips me lid to 'em all. And I don't know when he actually transferred from the RE - how did the Tank Corps numbering system work. Were they specific number blocks? delta Posted 26 November , 2007 Share Posted 26 November , 2007 There were; but I'm not an expert. those men serving with the 300 prefix do not seem to appear before the middle of Summer. What I suggest you do is open a new thread in "Soldiers" and one of the real experts will no help you Stephen
