Guest Hill 60 Posted 21 January , 2004 Posted 21 January , 2004 SDGW: S/27068 Rifleman Charles William Mayatt 13th Bn Rifle Brigade Born & enlisted: Lewisham, Kent Residence: Catford, Kent Killed in Action. Formerly: R/24231 KRRC
Guest Hill 60 Posted 21 January , 2004 Posted 21 January , 2004 CWGC: Name: MAYATT, CHARLES WILLIAM Initials: C W Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Rifleman Regiment: Rifle Brigade Unit Text: 13th Bn. Date of Death: 21/01/1917 Service No: S/27068 Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 129 Cemetery: LOOS MEMORIAL Country: France Locality: Pas de Calais Location Information: The Loos Memorial forms the side and back of Dud Corner Cemetery, and commemorates over 20,000 officers and men who have no known grave, who fell in the area from the River Lys to the old southern boundary of the First Army, east and west of Grenay. Loos-en-Gohelle is a village 5 kilometres north-west of Lens, and Dud Corner Cemetery is located about 1 kilometre west of the village, to the north-east of the N43 the main Lens to Bethune road. Historical Information: Dud Corner Cemetery stands almost on the site of a German strong point, the Lens Road Redoubt, captured by the 15th (Scottish) Division on the first day of the battle. The name "Dud Corner" is believed to be due to the large number of unexploded enemy shells found in the neighbourhood after the Armistice. On either side of the cemetery is a wall 15 feet high, to which are fixed tablets on which are carved the names of those commemorated. At the back are four small circular courts, open to the sky, in which the lines of tablets are continued, and between these courts are three semicircular walls or apses, two of which carry tablets, while on the centre apse is erected the Cross of Sacrifice. No. of Identified Casualties: 20596 Note: Both the SDGW and the CWGC have his name as Mayatt, it would appear to be a typo on the Forum page.
Guest Hill 60 Posted 21 January , 2004 Posted 21 January , 2004 Terry - Thanks for changing the name, it had confused for a while
Terry Denham Posted 21 January , 2004 Posted 21 January , 2004 No problem, Lee. It was my error. I am now busy ploughing through the remaining 350 or so names for 2004 to avoid a repetition!
christine liava'a Posted 21 January , 2004 Posted 21 January , 2004 Most of the Mayatts in the 1881 census come from various places in Kent, and there seem to be at least 2 other Kentish Mayatts who died in WW1 Joseph Henry Mayatt ,of Milton, Kent in Jerusalem 23 December 1917 2nd/18th Batt London Irish and WALTER M. Guest Pete Wood Posted 21 January , 2004 Posted 21 January , 2004 Alonzo Mayatt, who was married in 1884, was running the Post Office in Southend (district of) Catford in 1914. I believe Alonzo was the father of Charles....
Guest Debra Posted 8 August , 2005 Posted 8 August , 2005 I am the Grandaughter of Nellie Mayatt born ST Mary Cray Kent and have the MAYATT family tree. ALL the men named in these posts WERE related. Alonzo George Mayatt and Charles William Mayatt were brothers - twins to be exact the sons of Alonzo Mayatt [born Russia] and Esther Florence nee BELCHAM. You are correct that they were postmaster at Catford. Alonzo George Mayatt went on to be awarded a Knighthood for his services to the post office by the King at St James Palace on 21/11/1947. He married Kate Wickenden in 1921. Joseph Henry Mayatt was a cousin of Alonzo and Charles. I have 2 war records of the MAYATT. Henry/Harry William Mayatt enlisted and "forgot" to tell his wife. He also "forgot" to tell the army he was married . I have letters written to the army by his wife asking that they make some sort of payments to her. An order for stoppages was made and states" I hereby order that no.903 Rank and Name Private Henry William Mayatt Corps 3rd Bn Royal West Kent Regiment, be placed under a stoppage of pay at the rate of 6 pence per day from the date of this order to support his wife . Should the soldier attain the rank of serjeant or if a serjeant be reduced below that rank the stoppages will be increased to 10 pence per day or reduced to whichever the case may be from the date of such promotion or reduction in rank". The MAYATT line took a heavy toll during the war. Not only were 3 brothers killed along with their cousins but also the sons of married female MAYATT also fell. Most of them served in the same units. This includes ALBERT HENRY BISHOP private Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment) 2nd/4th Bn. Service No: 205051 CHARLES JOHN PRINGLE 9TH BATTALION ROYAL WEST SUSSEX REGINMENT G/3872, SUSSEX ; John HUCKS The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment) 8th Bn Service No: G/14501; FERGUS O'CONNOR BONSER husband of Ada Mayatt Service number 15135 9TH BATTALION LEICESTERSHIRE Regiment, LEICESTERSHIRE just to name but a few. If you would like further details let me know. Cheers Debra
