Oiler "Balakani"

Seeking information and photographs of the oiler "Balakani" and crew members.

It seems she was mined on 9th September 1915 and sank with the loss of 6 lives.

Names of those lost have been supplied by CWGC but I alas I can find no further information.

BALAKANI

Petroleum Steamship Co.; 1899; Sir J.Laing& Sons; 3,696 tons;

335 x 45x28; 326 n.h.p.; 10 knots; triple-expansion engines.

The tanker Balakani was mined and sunk half-a-mile S.W. of the

South Longsand Buoy on September 9th, 1915. Six men were

killed; The captain was among the survivors.

Thanks for that John.

At 10.00 pm on the 6th September 1915 my Gt Uncle, Lieut RNR, was ordered to escort her from the west coast of Cornwall to 5 miles off Start Point!
