Hi everyone,

I'm a new member so am a bit new to all this - please be patient.

I'm trying to research an action that a relative of mine was involved with - but which I can find no trace of.

The Medal Card reads: Awarded Military Medal - FRANCE - Witney, J.J. Sergeant - Acting Company Sergeant Major. 2nd Btn Royal Fusiliers ( attatched 2nd Btn Royal West Surrey ). Date of Gazette: 10/8/1916.

Now, I've looked in The London Gazette over quite a long time frame and can find no mention of "Witney J.J." or any other obvious spelling of his name.

I've checked the War Diaries of both Units - and have come up with nothing.

Does anyone know what action this may have been and where I can get information on it or am I shooting at the moon ???

Thanks,

M.R.W.

Hello MRW

Try this link: he is there!

http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/ViewPDF.a...ey&similar=

"8572 Sjt. (Actg. Coy. S./M.) J. J. Witney, R. Fus." .

If that is the date of the Gazette, the medal was probably awarded up to three months earlier but probably in July 1916, if 2/West Surreys were employed on the Somme.

Good luck with trying the War Diaries again!

Hi Ron,

Thanks for your help - you're a star!

I don't know why I couldn't find it!

Now, I guess , it's back to the War Diaries for another look. Like I said "I'm a bit new to all this"

Cheers,

M.R.W.
