Anthony Bagshaw Posted 20 November , 2007 Share Posted 20 November , 2007 Some of you may be aware that i have recently put on an exhibition on the War Memorial in Mansfield Woodhouse in the local library. Today, the library have called and have said that someone has left a medal for me. The library does not have their name, address or why the medal was left for me but were told that they wanted to give it to me. I have no idea who they were and cannot even thank them for it. I don't know their reasons why either. The medal is a Victory medal named to 205640 Pte W Holden KOYLI. Can anyone tell me anything about him? I have searched Online MIC's which shows his first name as Walter. I have also searched CWGC and he does not appear here. I'm really flabergasted that someone will do this. Will be nice to try and find a little about him Can anyone tell me anything please?
bigronhartley Posted 20 November , 2007 Share Posted 20 November , 2007 Hello Anthony, Nice surprise ! The Victory medal named to 205640 Pte W Holden KOYLI . His number indicates service with the 5th (Territorial) Battalion, this was based at Doncaster with Companies at Pontefract, Doncaster, Goole, Featherstone, Conisboro' and Castleford. Hope this helps. Regards Ron
Kath Posted 20 November , 2007 Share Posted 20 November , 2007 I think it would be a query for the local paper, Anthony. You could fashion it as a "Thank you" to the donor, & a plea to get in touch. Kath.

mikebriggs Posted 21 November , 2007 Share Posted 21 November , 2007 That it is nice Anthony, he was not entitled to 14 or 14-15 Star and considering he only has his 6-digit number recored on the MIC I would guess he arrived in France after April 1917. I'll e-mail you the MIC cheers Mike
Chris_Baker Posted 21 November , 2007 Share Posted 21 November , 2007 Could be 2/5th Battalion. They went overseas in early 1917.

westkent78 Posted 21 November , 2007 Share Posted 21 November , 2007 Anthony, Using Geoff's handy tool it appears there isn't any clear pattern from the casualties, other than they all occur in 1918: 205626 1/4th 23/04/18 205610 2/4th 27/03/18 205637 7th attached 7th Rif.Bde 02/04/18 205628 7th attached 7th Rif.Bde 02/04/18 205613 1st 03/10/18 205662 5th 20/7/18 205663 2/5th 27/03/18 205673 1st 17/10/18. Hope you find out some more about him. Matthew
