Jim Clay Posted 19 November , 2007 Share Posted 19 November , 2007 Pals The service papers for Pte 36360 Thomas Clay, 98 Coy, MGC, show that he became a casualty in the field* on 4/7/1917 and was transferred to 99 FA on 7/7/1917. He rejoined his unit on 3/9/1917. Can any one say what action he was involved in on 4/7/1917 when he became a casualty. Thanjs. Jim * I assume this is what is recorded in the 'Place of casualty' field. See the snippet of the form here: Also, any suggestion what follows 'Adm FA' in the middle line? sotonmate Posted 19 November , 2007 Share Posted 19 November , 2007 Jim 98 Coy MGC was in 98 Brigade of 33 Division for the start of the Battle of the Somme, they were involved in the Battle of Albert (1-13 July 1916). 99 Field Ambulance was one of 33 Division's RAMC units. Can't decipher the handwriting though ! Best wishes Sotonmate
hmsk212 Posted 19 November , 2007 Share Posted 19 November , 2007 Also, any suggestion what follows 'Adm FA' in the middle line? Possibly PUO " Pyrexia of Unknown Origin " ( Trench Fever ) Steve
Jim Clay Posted 20 November , 2007 Author Share Posted 20 November , 2007 Thanks for that sotonmate and Steve(hmsk). Steve, I think you're right about 'PUO'. And the time in hospital indicates it was a typically nasty case, based on what I've since read up on PUO/trench fever. sotonmate, any idea what 98 Coy MGC were up to on 4 July 1917? His casualty record shows he joined the Coy on 28 July 1916. Thanks again. Jim
sotonmate Posted 20 November , 2007 Share Posted 20 November , 2007 Jim Is it possible that it says rejoining 98 Coy from Hosp? In which case it is likely that he was with them on 4 July. Sotonmate

Sotonmate Cheers sotonmate. Sorry, I didn't post the full casualty record: he was first recorded as a casualty on 4 July '17, was transferred to 99 Field Amb on 7 July and admitted (with what appears to be PUO), was in hospital for best part of 2 months, and rejoined 98 Coy on 3 September '17. What I was wondering was what actions his unit were involved in leading up to 4 July '17. The LLT shows that 33rd Division had been involved in actions on the Hindenburg Line in May and June '17. Thanks for your interest! Cheers, Jim
