HI ALL,

JUST WONDERING IF ANYONE HAS ANY INFORMATION ABOUT THE LOCATIONS OR BATTLES THAT THE 2ND D.L.I WERE INVOLVED IN.

ESPECIALLY MY GIRLFRIENDS GRANDAD 4/9106 JAMES GEORGE 2ND D.L.I.

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHY HE HAD A 4/ BEFORE HIS REGIMENTAL NUMBER. THE ONLY OTHER THING THAT WE KNOW IS THAT HE WENT TO FRANCE ON 4 NOVEMBER 1914

ANY INFORMATION WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED NO MATTER HOW SMALL

Did you have a read of the Long Long Trail at top left of this page ? It's indispensible with questions of this sort. It will tell you that 2 DLI was part of 18 Brigade and 6 Division which shipped out to St Nazaire on 10 Sept 1914,and went straight to the the Battle of the Aisne to help us out of a spot, then to Flanders. See:

http://www.1914-1918.net/6div.htm

for a history of the 6th Division and it's Brigades and Battalions, and then, for the Aisne battle:

http://www.1914-1918.net/bat4.htm

If you then click on the links on the 6div page you will access the other actions they were involved in.

You might also like to get info from the Battalion War Diary which is at Kew under WO95/1617, covers period Aug 1914 to Mar 1919,and which gives a day-to-day account of activities and positions.

Best wishes

Hi

Please find attached a copy of his war and victory medal roll sheet

This shows he only served with 2/DLI, the 1914 star roll confirms the date for entry into France.

At the time of his arrival 2/DLI were in reserve at Rue Delettre until 14th November when they relieved the KSLI in the trenches at Rue De Bois where they remained until 27th November.

The 4/ infront of his number shows he had enlisted into the 4th Special Reserve battalion DLI. All the reinforcements arriving at this time came fro the 3rd and 4th Battalions.

Hope this helps you should be able to enlarge the photo to read it.
