Remembered Today:

Robert Barley

I thought that I had found the medal card for my gg uncle Robert Barley, on the NA site. There are only 3 listed, one has additional initials, that I could discount, which left one in the Lincolnshire reg and the other in the Gordon Highlanders. As he came from Barton upon Humber & had 2 brothers in the Lincs regiment, I thought that must be him. However, the service records for this solider are now on ancestry & it is NOT him

He is listed as having served in the army on a list from the 1919 Peace day, so I know that he did serve, but I was surprised that he would have been with the Gordon Highlanders & Highland Light Infantry. Is this likely, or is there another Robert Barley, that I haven't found already?

The 7070 service number for the Gordons looks like a pre-war regular. Would that fit with the age of Robert?

The other alternative is that Robert was in the navy or an army unit with home service in the UK.

Hi Mel,

He was born in 1880, so would have been old enough to be in the army pre war, although he was at home in 1901. His name is included in a list of those who served in the field, in the army, as opposed to those who served at sea.

If there are no service papers that have survived then it might be wortywhile to contact the Gordons museum to see if they have any information:

I noticed on one of the associated websites that the first muster roll of 1794 included nine Englishmen!

If you can glean the date and age at enlistment that may well be decisive in ruling Robert in or out.
