Remembered Today:

Unit and location unknown

I attach a post card and I'm wondering if anyone out there can help shed some light on the unit involved and location. The original image does not scan well, so it difficult to see much in the way of detail on the soldiers themselves. However, the location (certainly the feature on the crest of the hill in the background) seems quite distinctive and may ring a few bells amongst Forum members.

The postcard (unused) was produced by 'Bamforth & Co. Ltd, Holmfirth (England) and New York'. It is No.1101 of the '"PATRIOT" Series'.

Over to the experts ...

Piper,

What you have to remember here is that for a lot of photographers the outbreak of the War was a boom time, plus it was also a way of getting rid of old topographical stock and in this case you may actually be looking at a pre-war photo of a Territorial Camp that has been patriotically enhanced for re-sale during the war.

Graham.

There is a postcard museum of Bamfords postcards in Holmfirth, though I think they are mostly saucy ones! Maybe the museum could identify the picture?

Great collection of pics piper,

Definately not the Peel Monument, and more like Castle Hill/Jubilee Tower that Max has posted, although the earthworks don't really appear on the card that you posted. That said here's a pic looking from Holmfirth towards the tower,

and if yer fancy have a look here, it's fully searchable and quite a useful link,

cheers, Jon

I thought I recognized it when I saw it and that was before someone pointed out Huddersfield - I am convinced this is Huddersfield and therefore one of the West Riding TA units.

Hello Piper,

As Benedictine says, it could be one of the Huddersfield based West Riding TA units. The 5th Battalion West Riding Regiment had a Company based at Holmfirth, the home of Balmforth's Post Cards. Tony Lund of this Forum is extremely knowledgable on all matters relating to Holmfirth, try contacting him.Hope this helps.

Regards

Ron
