Remembered Today:

Christmas Truce

Hello

Was at the site of the Christmas Truce in Ploegsteert over the w/e and noticed the memorial (or cross) that the Khaki Chums erected, has vanished. The football is still there.

Does anyone know the reason why and is it coming back?

I read somewhere on this forum that it was going to be removed for renovation or repair.

Percy,

Until recently the base of the cross was in a bad condition and had become loose in its base. A few weeks ago whilst passing the site I noticed a note attached to the base from the Khaki Chums saying that the cross had been removed to be repaired and it would be returned upon completion of the works.

Hope this helps

Hi Percy, Mick and Iain,

Yes, the Cross had been damaged (probably by a tractor) and had broken at the base. We collected it on 14th October and it is currently being repaired.

We hope to replace it next weekend while we are travelling back from the unveiling of the new Tank Corps Memorial at Flesquieres.

Whatever happens it will be back in time for the 93rd Anniversary of the Truce.

With best wishes,

Taff
