JMO Posted 14 November , 2007 Share Posted 14 November , 2007 Earlier this year, my wife and I made our first trip to the battlefields of Belgium (Ypres Salient). Before we left home we visited the Avenue of Honour in Kings Park (Perth, Australia) to randomly collect the names of a few soldiers whom we might 'visit' when in Belgium. Cpl Lodge was the very first name we came across after we parked our car. Cpl Francis Miller Lodge 51st Batt AIF KIA at Passchendaele 12-Oct-1917 Aged 20 SN 2668 Buried at PASSCHENDAELE NEW BRITISH CEMETERY XIII. D. 1. Son of Francis Wheatley Lodge, and Marian Lodge, of 31, Congdon St., Osborne, Western Australia. Born at Cottesloe, Western Australia. We visited Belgium, found Cpl Lodge and left a memorial to him. It was very moving. I am now interested in finding out if he has any living relatives. And anything else we can discover. I have his military papers from the AWM site. I don't expect anyone to popup on this forum, but you never know with the GWF.

Procat Posted 14 November , 2007 Share Posted 14 November , 2007 Hi John, I have had a look at his records at the NA which supports a lot of the above. I also note that his mother was still alive in 1924. In addition, there is a publication called "Australia's Fighting Sons of The Empire. Portraits and Biographies of Australians in the Great War". It includes a photo of Francis Miller Lodge at page 136 (attached) and a small summary: If you PM me your email I can send you the full image. Procat Posted 14 November , 2007 Share Posted 14 November , 2007 Pleased to help John. Just a shame we can't pick up the marriage of the sisters. Unfortunately the WA BMD records for marriages stop at 1916. The deaths stop at 1940. So we probably miss the marriage for the sisters and the death of Mum. It appears from the trees on Ancestry that other researchers have encountered the same problems as they also come to a halt at the same spot. JMO Posted 14 November , 2007 Author Share Posted 14 November , 2007 Doug, You have gone well beyond the call of duty mate. I am very impressed with what you have provided. John
Procat Posted 14 November , 2007 Share Posted 14 November , 2007 Hi John, Just remembered I have WA marriages to 1933 on CD. The girls are not on there nor did Mum remarry. I wonder if they remained spinsters or moved interstate. Doug
JMO Posted 14 November , 2007 Author Share Posted 14 November , 2007 Doug, Even more interesting. Perth is a small place. I might try the 'seeking someone' pages of the local rag. John
Procat Posted 14 November , 2007 Share Posted 14 November , 2007 Hi John, You might like to have a trawl through the WA links on this page: http://www.coraweb.com.au/cemetaus.htm Doug
Procat Posted 14 November , 2007 Share Posted 14 November , 2007 John, Matter resolved though not perhaps the one you wanted: http://www.mcb.wa.gov.au/default.php Lodge Dora Marjory 94 years 1993 Greenmount W.A. Lodge Mary Constance 65 years 1961 Boya Lodge Marian 81 years 1954 South Perth If you had the time and the inclination you may find something more in the newspaper death notices. If you click on the surname for each of the entries on the website you will get more information such as date of death etc. Doug
Auimfo Posted 14 November , 2007 Share Posted 14 November , 2007 Witha bit of luck this might be an easy solution for you. If you check the online White Pages and look for Lodge's in Cottesloe you'll find there are two. I'm tipping they'd probably be relations. http://www.whitepages.com.au/wp/resSearch.jhtml Cheers, Tim L.
Auimfo Posted 14 November , 2007 Share Posted 14 November , 2007 I've found that there was also the following family living in Cottesloe at about the same time Sydney Lodge m Isabel Jessie Backhouse They had children: Lancelot Sydney Lodge b.1900 Hope Vivienne Lodge b.1903 Surely this would be Francis (Jnr) uncle, aunt and cousins (and probably directly links to the family still living in Cottesloe) Cheers, Tim L.
