DaveMurphy Posted 13 November , 2007 Share Posted 13 November , 2007 G'day All, I have a badly damaged paper cutting entitled 'The Hero's of Manchester Hill' which appeared in the 'Daily Sketch' newspaper on Page 4 of 11 April 1918. I also have a badly damaged scanner, so can't reproduce it yet for your viewing pleasure!! I believe the picture has my GGF Capt JT Ball MC in it, but the caption is torn off as well as what I hope is an accompanying article. It should also identify the others in the group of about six soldiers. I hope there is a kind soul with access to the Daily Sketch archive who might be able to scan the full article for me. Any help would be greatfully received! Warm Regards, Dave
robmoff Posted 14 November , 2007 Share Posted 14 November , 2007 If you get no joy here, it is possible to get reproduction Daily Papers aas presents. The Daily Sketch is not listed by all the companies doing this (went out of print just before electronic archives were established, I think). Going to cost £20-30, so I hope someone can find an archive for you.

JulianB Posted 15 November , 2007 Share Posted 15 November , 2007 I think you can order photocopies from the British Library (Colindale) - ie the newspaper library
DaveMurphy Posted 16 November , 2007 Author Share Posted 16 November , 2007 Right, finally got it scanned. I have been quoted 15 Quid for a copy by mail from the British Library, but could take a while to make it to Sydney! Any chance it might be in someones local library? Cheers, Dave
DaveMurphy Posted 16 November , 2007 Author Share Posted 16 November , 2007 I think JT Ball (GGF) is in the picture at bottom left. Here is another pic of him to compare... whaddaya think? I also think the article is a composite taken from previous photographs, as I believe the chap seated at centre is LTCOL W Elstob VC, who was awarded the VC posthumously for the action. Any thoughts??
DaveMurphy Posted 18 November , 2007 Author Share Posted 18 November , 2007 I think the chap sitting on Elstob's left (our right) is Capt Sharples, the Adjutant. He was also killed in Manchester Redoubt. Come to think of it, every picture I have seen of a unit group has the adjutant seated left of the Battalion CO, and the Major to his right, was this always the protocol? DaveMurphy Posted 18 November , 2007 Author Share Posted 18 November , 2007 From Robert Bonner of the Manchesters Museum: The photograph was probably taken at Reninghelst near Poperinghe in early January 1918 whilst the 16th were training and reorganising. So maybe not a composite. How long would a newspaper hold negatives of original photograph I wonder? Dave
