mike adams Posted 13 November , 2007 Share Posted 13 November , 2007 My grandfather, Lawrence, served in the ranks in the 5th battery RFA from January 1895 until he was discharged in April 1914. I have just got his 'burnt records' from Ancestry showing that he was recalled to the 1st division RFRA in September 1914, service no 99928, in Leeds. Possibly because of his age (39 at recall) he did not go abroad but remained in Leeds at Chapeltown barracks. Now the question: I thought Chapeltown barracks was cavalry - what was a RFA bombadier doing there? Family legend has it that he was involved in horse breaking. Also, I have hit a wall in finding any further details of his service - any ideas on how to move forward? Many thanks, Mike Adams
