Geoff,

Don't worry about the Gazette, most MM award citations were not gazetted. Have a look in the local paper they usually carried the citations a few weeks after the award was won.

True, but if i could find a Gazette entry it may give me start to find regiment and number etc, Geoff

Geoff,

I have some info at work relating to the Scottish Rifles Albert Cole - when i'm back in monday i'll have a look through and forward you what we have; it wont be much, but might help narrow down the field somewhat.

Cheers

Barrie

I think our man might be 82256 Pte A E Cole 23 Batt Royal Fusiliers as he is listed from Liverpool which i believe is where he originated, any further input appreciated

Hi Geoff,

I know you said you thought your man was most likely Pte A E Cole of the Royal Fusiliers, but thought i'd post some details of RQMS A Cole of the Scottish Rifles just in case.

He was born in Manchester, and enlisted into the Regiment in 1901 in Leicester. He was gazetted for the Military Medal on 14th September, 1916. The war diary doesn't mention the award, nor does the Regimental History, so no idea what it was for. He was also mentioned in despatches on 14th December, 1917. When he was discharged from the ranks in 1922 he was immediately commissioned as Lieutenant and Quartermaster for the 7th Bn, where he stayed until his retirement from the Army in 1938 with the rank of Major. He died 15th May, 1944 in a hospital in Glasgow. His obituary states that he had four children, three of which were serving in the forces when he died.
