stevem49 Posted 10 November , 2007 Share Posted 10 November , 2007 I had a piece in the Derbyshire Times yesterday (mistake!!) As well as a number of book orders I ended up with a number of questions from people. Ernest Baguley 2nd Bn was killed 09/08/1915 - Menin Gate Albert Baguley 1/6th Bn died of wounds on 24/09/1916. - Warlincourt Halte, Saulty Could anyone place the Battalions for me on these dates please. As ever, I will be eternally grateful - if not longer. (Might even buy you half a shandy at the East Midlands meet ) Stevem
Greenwoodman Posted 10 November , 2007 Share Posted 10 November , 2007 Why ask us? We normally ask you!! 2nd Battalion were involved at the action at Hooge on that day. Interestingly, they took over dugouts from the 6th SF on the 6th Aug - was it a last meeting of the two brothers? There are five pages in Wylly on the incident at Hooge - d'you want it all? If so PM me your e-mail address.
mikebriggs Posted 10 November , 2007 Share Posted 10 November , 2007 3437 Albert Baguley:- Enlisted 28.10.14 Arrived in F & F 28.2.15 Served with "A" Company and was wounded on 5.8.15 at Zillebeke d/w 24.9.16 at Bellacourt Recorded on Staveley Memorial The 1/6th Battn were holding front line trenches at Bellacourt in front of Talus from 20-26th September. Here's a bit from my 'work in progress' "September and October was a relatively quite time for the Battalion. Following a further raid on the Talus on the 1st September, which was halted by barbed wire, the Battalion were relieved by the 5/Sherwood Foresters and moved into Brigade reserve at Bellacourt. However, they continued to provide garrisons for the various strong points along the front line. Throughout the next two months the Battalion alternated between right sector front line trenches in front of Bellacourt, Brigade reserve in Bellacourt or Divisional Reserve in Bailleulval. This arrangement effectively meant that each Battalion of the Brigade spent eighteen days in the village of Bellacourt; comprising six days in the front line trenches, six days in reserve and another six days in the trenches, which was then followed by six days of rest at Divisional Reserve in Bailleulval. Whilst in Bailleulval the Battalion were joined by various drafts of men." Is there a copy of a photo of Albert available cheers Mike p.s. i have quite a few picutres of the Bellacourt sector but none of the Cemetery
Cliff. Hobson Posted 10 November , 2007 Share Posted 10 November , 2007 Steve, The following might be of interest to you, 9th August 1915 was a black day for the village of Whitwell, Derbyshire it lost 7 men, 5 at Suvla Bay and 2 at Hooge the two at Hooge were Charlie Jackson, eldest brother of Les. Jackson ex Derbyshire/England Cricketer who died recently and Joe Taylor both with 2nd Battalion, Sherwood Forester, :- a copy of rather a sad letter, below. Regards Cliff. TAYLOR JOSEPH WILLIAM, Age 20 , 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. Killed in Action, 9th August 1915. Commemorated, Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres. Mr. and Mrs. Taylor of East Parade Whitwell received information that their only son Joseph, has been killed in action 9th August 1915. The distressing news was conveyed in the following letter from Lance Cpl., E. Bilbie of Creswell, who like Taylor was with the Sherwood Foresters. His letter dated 11th August , says:- “ Dear Friends I am writing a few lines to you on behalf of your dear son Joe as he was in my section and as I lived in Creswell a few years ago he and I have been pals. So I am very sorry to say he was killed yesterday , 9th, in action while in a charge as he died a young hero and a man, surely he would have been mentioned for his bravery. He was well liked by us all and could not afford to lose a hero like him but thank God he died at his post, he was hit by a bullet and died in a second, without uttering a word. When the charge was over and we were victorious , we had the worst to go through, that was the Roll Call, we were very badly cut up, losing a terrible lot of men but still he will never be forgot by all that is living from the big battle. We were fighting for eighteen hours and never stopped . It was terrible we lost about 400 men out of our Battalion. I will write you again someday when we have got this over and tell you about it. I am very much upset at present . I saw a letter to him and when it came and seeing that it came from Whitwell, I took charge of it and opened it in order that I might find you address and return the letter. He also had a parcel come and it was opened by my order and divided amongst his comrades as we all make that “will” before we go into action to share everything up and answer to any letters that come for us, so I am sending you the letter that came with the parcel. I hope you will take note as a token from his comrades as he will be buried tonight and put with the other brave heroes . So I must wish you all good luck. I will write you more next time. So I must give you all my hearts blessing and hope to see your loving Son’s grave done tonight and will put up a cross. from L/Cpl. E Bilbie, B. Coy. 2nd Batt. Sherwood Foresters, B.E.F. Belgium.”
stevem49 Posted 10 November , 2007 Author Share Posted 10 November , 2007 GWman - even I do not know everything The elderly chap who asked me said his Uncles died but his dad survived. E Baguley's number is also wrong on the CWGC. He was also in the Leicister's first. They could well have met up on 6th August - spooky. He just phoned me and I could give him a lot of info. I will get him a photo of Menin Gate man next weekend. Mike I thought you may know something about him He does not think a photo survived but will check. I will probably see him on 24th before EMids meet. Looks like I will be doing book deliveries before the meet. Lots of phone calls after Derbyshire Times piece. Your 'work in progress' might be a book before mine is (It is going to print today - Yipee). Thanks for your help. Cliff Thanks for the added info. It really helps having an eye witness account of the day. Thanks to all Steve

stevem49 Posted 11 November , 2007 Author Share Posted 11 November , 2007 Hi Steve, Saw the piece in the DT, very impressive! I have a photo of the Staveley Memorial somewhere, any good?? Fame at last! I did get some book orders from it. Hazel Greaves sent me a copy of it. Once the book is in print (soon!) I will contact the Nott's papers and South Derby's. You wouldn't happen to have any SF men at Warlincourt Halte Saulty would you? The old chap I am doing it for has learned more in 24 hours than the previous 90 years. He is most impressed with 'my' team He still lives in Staveley, so knows the memorial but thanks for the offer. Steve
