1st/8th Btln Scottish Rifles

KIA 2-11-17

Looking for MIC

A picture if possible

and any information on his unit how he was killed etc a long shot i know but you guys are the best researchers i know. I want to give the family as much info on the man i can.

You need the War Diary WO95/4610 for the 1/8th SR,this covers the period 1/1916 to 3/1918 when the unit were in Egypt and Palestine,attached to 156 Brigade of the 52nd Lowland Division. The third battle of Gaza was in progress from 27 Oct to 7 Nov 1917 so it is likely that your man died there. I see that he is remembered on the Jerusalem Memorial.

October 31 1917."FLINTSHIRE DEFENCES" P.31.a.5.9 (trench map ref.) Battle of Gaza.

November 1. Preparing to attack EL ARISH REDOUBT. X and Z Companies attached to the 1/4th Royal Scots to take the Redoubt,Z as a fighting company and X as a store carrying company. Zero hour 0300 2.11.1917.

In a second attack,on UMBRELLA HILL,W and Y Companies attached to 1/7th Scottish Rifles,Y as fighting company and W as store carrying company. Zero hour 2300 1.11.1917.

November 2. All objectives taken and held.

Casualties:

UMBRELLA HILL KIA 2 Officers 22 ORs DOW 4 ORs Wounded 2 Officers 66 ORs. Missing 1 OR.

EL ARISH RDT. KIA 1 Offcier 7 ORs DOW 4 ORs Wounded 2 Officers 42 ORs. Missing 2 ORs.
