Can anyone tell me where I can find some reliable and comprehensive info about Belgian refugees, and the sorts of experiences they had before going to Britain?

There has been a fairly recent thread on Belgian refugees in the UK. Use search. For experience before fleeing see the Bryce Report 1915.

Thank you both. I tried the link, Harkness, but couldn't get a page to display, so will try again later.

Just a bit of trivia. Hercule Poirot, Agatha Christie's fictional detective, was apparently a refugee from Belgium.

Hello Gabriele

I double-checked the website address and realised I'd omitted some words!

www.greatwardifferent.com/Great_War/Everyman_Article/Everyman_Article.htm

Or type these words in the Google Search Box: Everyman+Special Belgian Relief Number
