Remembered Today:

The History of the 1/5th Battalion The Suffolk Regiment

I know there are a number of Pals on the Forum that already have this book by Captains A. Fair M.C. and E. D. Wolton, but after years of searching I'm happy to say I've at last managed to get hold of my own copy - a previous owner apparently being a Private 1013 George Rule of 'B' Company.

If anyone should require any look-ups please let me know!

cheers

Steve,

I would be very interested to know if there is any mention of:

Robert Malcolm BOWERS

who served as 2723 (later 240718) Private, 1/5th Suffolk Regiment.

He died in Egypt on 31st July 1917 and is buried in Kantara War Cemetery.

It is likely he died of disease but I have not been able to confirm this.

Ray,

Thankyou for this information.

I was unsure of the cause of death as different SDGW CD versions provide conflicting information.

Thanks PRC for the heads up. And you won't be shot as a spy if you venture south-your knowledge is too precious not to mention your search skills!

George Rule has three service numbers with medal card and index #1013, #240053 and #5820215. He was finally discharged between 1921 and 1939-sorry no more accurate than that so records may still be held.

Birthdate given as 17th February 1900.

Although Rule is a local name I cannot find anything for this man locally in Suffolk but will continue to look

Thanks for posting George - good to know. Interestingly, in the roll of honour in the book, George highlighted one of the casualties: Lance Corporal 221 C. S. Rose, who died of wounds on 13th August 1915. Presumably a personal friend or relative.
