Guest Gareth2050 Posted 26 October , 2007 Share Posted 26 October , 2007 Hi Could you help me to find any infomation on a my GrandFather Ernest Hughes born 1892. We think he was in the 295th Bde Royal Field Artillery in 'A' batt. Family legend also says that he was 'Major F Davenport R.F.A. DSO, MC' Baton Boy (I think Thats The Term) He was not killed in the War. Any help on where to look for his records would be a great.
sotonmate Posted 26 October , 2007 Share Posted 26 October , 2007 Gareth There are several RFA records in the Medal Index Card series WO372/10 at the National Archives. There are 9 with the single name Ernest,2 Ernest Gs,1 Ernest T,and 1 John Ernest. They all have service numbers and rank listed,so if you have that it will narrow things down. The MIC is often a starting point to finding out the rest of the story ! Good hunting ! Best wishes Sotonmate
MelPack Posted 26 October , 2007 Share Posted 26 October , 2007 Gareth Have a look at this thread on Davenport: http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/i...mp;hl=Davenport It would appear that he was the CO of the 296th between March - September 1917. MelPack Posted 26 October , 2007 Share Posted 26 October , 2007 Gareth Looking at the casualties for the 296th there is a large cluster of six figure numbers in the 805*** and 806*** range. This is the TF renumbering of the unit from early 1917 so the MIC for your man is likely to be this one: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...p;resultcount=2 Regards Mel
