Hi

Could you help me to find any infomation on a my GrandFather Ernest Hughes born 1892. We think he was in the 295th Bde Royal Field Artillery in 'A' batt. Family legend also says that he was 'Major F Davenport R.F.A. DSO, MC' Baton Boy (I think Thats The Term)

He was not killed in the War.

Any help on where to look for his records would be a great.

There are several RFA records in the Medal Index Card series WO372/10 at the National Archives.

There are 9 with the single name Ernest,2 Ernest Gs,1 Ernest T,and 1 John Ernest. They all have service numbers and rank listed,so if you have that it will narrow things down. The MIC is often a starting point to finding out the rest of the story !

Looking at the casualties for the 296th there is a large cluster of six figure numbers in the 805*** and 806*** range.

This is the TF renumbering of the unit from early 1917 so the MIC for your man is likely to be this one:
