From what I can gather the History Channel is starting a short series of war films on Saturday afternoons.

This Saturday the film is 'All quiet on the Western Front' though I don't know if it is the original version (was there more than one?)

Its not!

Its the one with John Boy from the Waltons and Ernest Borgnine!

Still worth watching IMHO

Two that I saw on DVD in my local "MVC" are "Gallipoli" and "All Quiet on the Western Front" (1979 version). I believe that "The Fighting 69th" is also available.

As seems usual with TV 'short series of films' they become ad-hoc and lose interest, bit like trying to follow a normal tv series on the BBC when wimbledon or international athletics happens to be on!

There seems to be no film this weekend so it was indeed a very short series of two unrelated films!

Still, LINE OF FIRE: MONS 1914 is on: 30 Jan 2004 Fri 17.00 - 18.00 &

31 Jan 2004 Sat 09.00 - 10.00

After years of searching and non-fulfilment of orders placed in video shops, I finally stumbled on the original All Quiet in a Bristol petrol station last year at the bargain price of £4.99 (1 of their 10 videos in stock!). Still the best war film ever made.

I have had the other one for ages, but, in my view, it is pretty rubbish in comparison.

I think it was the cable network A & E that put out "The Lost Battalion" about a year or so ago. It's now on DVD. A pretty good showing especially for a TV network movie. The lead is played by Rick Schrowder (spelling).

Cheers,

And if you have a Freeview box, "War Walks" seems to be on a continuous loop on UK History, so you'll catch Mons or The Somme at one point or another!
