A Forum Pal has very kindly sent me a copy of her grandfather's account of the 9th October 1917 attack by 3/5th Lancashire Fusiliers near Tyne Cot, which I shall be retracing on my forthcoming school tour. Interestingly he was the Platoon Sergeant of the officer who is a possible candidate for the unidentified LF soldier recently discovered on the old Ypres-Roulers Railway line and reburied in Tyne Cot. He also mentions the MO Captain Sandiford, who wrote a vivid first hand account of the action, and Bury Grammar School old boy Captain Frank Bentley. Both of these officers were awarded the MC for their actions on 9th October. Sergeant Ruscoe mentions that on the nightmarish approach march from Frezenberg Ridge to the start line his platooon lost 14 men to a single shell at 'Death's Valley'. I should imagine that one or two places in the Ypres salient might have gone by this name but has anyone any ideas of the exact location of this particular one?
